Hello everyone! I am active duty, and I am applying for MECP for the first time this year. I understand this is a highly competive program. I am still in the process of completing my package. I was wondering if anyone knew about how many people apply for the program each year. I see the selection message every year, but we never know how many people actually applied. I am very nervous. Also, does anyone know what exactly they are looking for in our applications? I have volunteer work (not in a hospital), great evals, and I am working on my personal statement now (that's the tough one, I've been told you don't want to be too personal).
If anyone help I appreciate it in advance!

Where are you located? May have a friend there that can help. If you can get into the hospital to do volunteer time, do it. I had a Seabee that worked with me in the ED one time to get volunteer experience. Is there a military hospital near you? They should be able to help you out, again, let me know and maybe I have a connection, maybe not. As for your personal statement, it should be about how your current rate has helped you in the Navy and how you becoming a nurse will benefit the Navy. Something like, "...my experience as an LPO (if you are/ have been one) has provided me with a basic understanding of leadership and that becoming an officer will help broaden that experience and allow me to be a more effective leader, blah, blah, blah..." Stuff like that, make it look like a win-win for the Navy. Let me know if I can be more help.

LCDR Dan,
I am currently stationed in New Orleans. We don't have a military hospital here, just a few clinics. Do you think not having hospital volunteer work will hurt me?
Thank you for the information,
Bries-
Hospital, clinic either one will work for experience. Do I think it will hurt you, no. Look at it from this angle though, let's say the baord is down to you and another guy/ girl. Your packages are identical in every way except for volunteer experience. Yours says Naval Medical Clinic New Orleans, 50 hours in Family Practice Clinic. The other persons says 50 hours at youth sports complex. Who do you think they will take? Again, I don't think it will hurt necessarily, but it should could help a lot, agree? Every little bit you can scrounge is that much more in your favor, that's my opinion.

I was picked up for MECP in 2004. In that year there were 200 applicants and 25 were picked up. It just depends on the year and how well the word is put out. I was told by those that sat on the board that what set the applicants that were not HMs on the board were those that had volunteered on their off duty time to get hospital and medical experience. I was picked up the first time I applied. I went to breasfeeding education classes and was certified as a Le LecheLeader and volunteered for a active duty breastfeeding education course. I think that coupled with solid recommendations, outstanding grades, and outstanding evals helped me get picked up. It really is about the whole package.

Hey there Everyone!,
Today, I just talked to a navy college counselor about my career plan and told me about MECP program. I was so confused about it but I realized this is what I've been waiting for. I thought is a great oppurtunity:D.
I really wanted to become a Nurse before I joined the Navy and I have this thought in my mind that being a nurse in the Navy is a great thing. Sad thing was, I went to HM school, and I didn't realy like it that much and for some personal issues I decided to switch rate. Now I'm an OS. I've been on deployment and saw how the HM's work. So I decided to get myself involved in medical department in my command. I've been a stretcher bearer that worked for the HM's in case of emergency and I realized what I have missed! , They trained us really well and a thought to myself came out "I want to become a Nurse when I get out"!!!!.. It was my stupid mistake that made me realized what I've done:banghead:
I'm a hardworking and good sailor. I have taken some prerequisites for Nursing and working on 3 more to qualified for MECP. I didnt know this program until I talked to Navy college. I thought the only commisioning programs is the STA 21. I was so schock because I know this is the opportunity that I've been looking for.
I want to apply for it, but I' was wondering how long do u have to stay in the Navy after you get commisioned? Anyone that went through this program please tell me some of your experiences? I would love to know. Feel free to say anything..
I made a mistake before, but I believe everything happens for a reason. No matter what happen I' will never gonna stop until my dream come to pass.
Thanks for any of you that reply,,,
GOD BLESS..
I salute all of you guys that are NURSES!!!!

Hello everyone!
When i last read the instruction for the MECP, once you're commissioned you re-enlist for an additional 6 years.
I (just today!) officially decided to apply for the MECP and before i joined the Navy, i was going to school for nursing but hadn't been accepted to any school yet that i applied to. I joined the Navy as an AM and am now starting the process of putting my package together.
If anyone has any tips or advice, I WOULD APPRECIATE ANYTHING YOU HAVE TO SAY!!! LCDR Dan, I saw that you may or may not know people in certain areas. I'm stationed on NASWI and would love to begin volunteering. I emailed my command Doc and asked for her advice too. Hopefully I can get the ball rolling soon! I think I have a couple more classes left to take, which wont be a problem.
If you have any info that you'd like to email me, my email address is [email protected]. Thank you for your help everyone!!! Wish me luck!!

PO Miller,
I'm at NASWI as well. Not sure if I'll be applying to the Navy's MECP or putting in an early out to attend Skagit Valley College full time, but either way... it's awesome to find someone on this base who is pursuing the same path (kind of). I'm volunteering at the UCC. Not sure how far along you've come since last year, but let me know how your package came along. This year will be my first. Look forward to hearing from you. :)
