My Results are back

I got the dreaded phone call tonight that I am GBS +. Fear and tears ran thru me cause if it is not one thing it is another. Now, I have to go for a bunch of testing which I don't really want to do. I am just really nervous even though it isn't fatal it still concerns me. I just wanted to let you all know my results.

one day at a time.

colonization is not a death sentence for you or baby.

go thru the tests; they will work w/you to determine the best way to proceed as delivery date approaches.

I truly wish u the best.

Let us know how things go. I do care.

will these allergy tests affect the baby? I know the percent of the baby being sick is really small but the thought still bothers me greatly. The other thing is my doctor's nurse was very vague and educated about this and when asking her questions she became frustrated which made me feel guilty for asking. I have to get a hold of the allergist tomorrow.

Big deep breath.....

Like the wise SmilingBluEyes said "One day at a time"

And finally, we're all here for you, and pulling for you too!

Let us know how things are going....

There are tons of women that are GBS+ and are treated with other antibiotics, such as clindamycin. It is approved for use when there is allergy to PCN. I know in my years in OB, I have never heard of allergy testing for this...although many many people say they are allergic to PCN and don't know why (cause my mother told me I was) or it was just a GI disturbance...and maybe finding out once and for all would be a good thing. I just don't know if the right time to do that is when you are pregnant. That is only my opinion! I just wanted to let you know there are alternative treatments for GBS for those who are allergic and they are used all of the time.

Good luck to you and happy baby.

Thanks for the support! I really need it b/c I am not doing well tonight, emotionally. Without getting into detail, I was a victim of medical malpractice and now suffer from PTSD and therefore I am petrified of all hospitals and any medical professionals b/c I was lied to in the past, etc. I can go on and on but I am also allergic to Erythomycin so that is why they wanted to do allergy testing. I want to ask the doctor if there is any side effects of this but i can guarantee he will say nothing will happen which makes me mad cause there is always a side effect to everything. I heard I can go into contractions getting this testing done. My doula who is NP said there isn't really anything to worry about and I do trust her. Please keep me in your thoughts.

Is there any questions I should be asking the allergist before I do this?

I had allergy testing for PCN done when I was 36 weeks pregnant. I was one of six kids and while my mom was pretty sure I was the one who got the hives she wasn't positive!!! My test was negative and I am very happy I had it done. Have someone go with you as you have to sit there for awhile while they do the different levels of testing. My son who had a questionable reaction to Amoxicillin when he was small also had testing done which was negative. It is so worth it if you can have these antibiotics. If the tests are positive at least you are certain of your allergies.

Take care

No real advice other than to keep the faith and take everything at a time. God bless. :icon_hug:

I agree w/Peg. The tests are worth it. You may find you are not as allergic as you think, to some of them.

Until then, like I said, one day at a time----keep talking to your dr about your concerns and fears. (((Hugs)))

Again, thanks for the support. Here is the latest. I have an appt. next Wednesday to start the testing. I wished they could have got me in earlier. Why, I don't know since I will be starting my 37th week this Sat. I just keep calling everyday hoping for a cancellation. I am going to be tested with PCN first and then clindomycin/erythomycin. I just hope I don't go into labor first. If I did, what would they do? Anyone faced with a patient who was allergic. I don't know what I could take. I am just breathing and saying to myself, there is no need to worry b/c worry won't do me any good right now. Will definately keep you updated on this.

Being GBS positive is no big deal! There should be abolutely no need to do anything except have antibiotics when you are in active labor or whenever your water breaks.

What "tests" are you talking about? There is no testing done with positive GBS?

PLEASE stop worrying. It sounds as if your health care provider has you all in an uproar over nothing.

We,too, just use Clindamycin in PCN allergic people.

Can I just add one word of advice? If you are this upset and suffer from PTSD, you might want to consider getting some therapy and help. Having a child is NOT a walk in the park. If you have some help, you may find those early months with a new baby a little easier.

Also, you need to get past being "petrified of medical professionals". Your new baby is going to make at least 10 routine pediatrician visits in the first two years of life (not to mention any sick visits on top of that). The pediatrician is a medical professional. You're going to have to learn to develop some trust in people who are trained to assist you and care for your health. You are also going to have to learn to deal with people in a calm and efficient manner. All of us "medical professionals" have a pretty good sense of when a person can cope and when they cannot. We are all "mandated reporters." The more ill at ease you are, the more red flags you will be sending up to peolpe who are trained to help you. I do not mean this in anything but a kind way, but I would say the same to any of my patients in the hospital or those I visit in the home during my work with the VNA.

Bottom line is the fastest way to have social servoces and child protective services on your back is to show the inability to cope (especially with infants and children). So, if you are feeling the need for social and especially emotional support, start accessing that care NOW. It's gerat that you have a doula all lined up! They are wonderful!!

Just from reading your short post above, I would have to say that you have already raised a few red flags for me. Your GBS status is the least of your worries.

Please go to childbirth classes (as well as breastfeeding class if that is your preferred method of infant feeding).

Best of luck to you.
