MY NEXT STEP

Published

Hoping to get pointed in the right direction. I have completed all of my classes required and want to apply to LPN/RN school but my one problem is that I have a record that is going back 21 years. I currently live in NJ and really want to accomplish this goal of mines of becoming a LPN or RN but I'm worried I wont get accepted into the progam. If anyone can point me in the right direction in what step/steps to take it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you...

talk to a counselor at the schools you are interested in taking, see what prerequisites you need to take for both programs and go from there.

The more important thing you need to do is to contact your state's board of nursing to see if you will not be disqualified from becoming a nurse due to your criminal record. It doesn't really matter if you can get in and go to school if the BON won't license you.

All prerequisites are done.

I went to the BON and was told that they have nothing to do with the schools and acceptance in the programs. Basically they are telling me its up to the school. So, im trying to see what to do next or how to approach the school to try to get in their program. Mine you, this charge is over 20 years.

To OP - I think you missed the point of jsfarri's post. Nsg school is a separate body, distinct from the BON which is responsible for issuing eligibility to sit for NCLEX and licensure issues. The 2 are NOT related and they each have their own rules. The college may accept you for your schoolwork/training but the BON may determine that you are INELIGBLE to sit NCLEX because of your history.

So the point is you don't want to spend time & money to go to school, and then find out after all is said & done, that you CANNOT sit for NCLEX and therefore will NEVER EVER be licensed. There is also an issue concerning student clinical sites (hospitals, nsg homes, etc). Some facilities DO NOT permit students with records.

The Terms of Service here on AllNurses DO NOT permit members to solicit advice on medical and legal issues. And members are NOT permitted to give advice. So you're back to checking with your school choice about their admission policies. Give them your details.
