My Nephew

My sister took her baby to the doctors to get a flu shot. He is 1 year old. The nurse was in a rush so when she gave my nephew the shot, she pulled out the needle and scrached my nephew with the neddle. My sister was to busy trying to keep my nephew calm becuase he was crying. the nurse quickly put on the bandages and told my sister there was a little scratch and not to worry... when my sister got home she took off the bandages and there it was bleeding really bad and the scratch was 2 1/2 inches long. We both were really mad.. I was not there when they were at the clinic. What should we do???

I know I am very upset when something goes wrong with my family members.

One year olds are wiggle worms. He was most likely thrashing. I am sorry for your bad feelings. This was normal. I don't think you would want your nephew restrained on a papoose board, but that might prevent this in the future.

He has to hold still, decide how you want to do it, perhaps you go with your sister and help hold him.

this was my first thought. No matter what, kids tend to wiggle when they're young. I remember a pt who was about 6 and we were doing a filling on her (not her first one either) and she kept screaming because of the sound of the drill. She refused headphone and it was taking us forever (she was already numb)

We got her to settle down and the DDS started to drill. She jerked her head to the side and the drill went straight into her cheeck. We told her it was important to sit still because this would happen, but she still moved. She ended up with a ton of stiches in her mouth and from then on out she was put under. I would suspect the little one was jerking around.

It may look like it was blooding a lot but believe me it will settle - you might have stirred up the bleeding again by disturbing the clot and removing the bandage. A needle - no matter how sharp should not cut that deep unless one is REALLY trying - a little pressure on the site = some reassurance to Mum and Bub should be fine. Jsut think - this might be his first scratch but if he is a normal active child it will not be his last.

I can think of a few times in my practice something went wrong. I still get the creeps when I think of one situation. I was starting an IV on someone who seemed to be sane. He moved and jerked his arm and yuk, the insite cath went through his skin and out the other side.

Don't try this at home folks
