Moving to Rhode Island

Can anyone tell me what the job opportunities are like right now in RI. Ideally, want to be in a historic area, downtown, not sure if that would be Providence or not? Seems that cost of living isn't that bad. Currently in Raleigh, NC. Any info on area and job outlook appreciated. Thanks!

I wish I could tell you that jobs are plentiful in RI, but sadly this isn't the case. We have a high unemployment rate. If you are an experienced nurse you may be able to find something, but new grads are out of luck. I only know one graduating senior in my program who has a job lined up, and last year many new grads moved out of state to find work.

Providence-- be careful where you're looking, as some areas are sketchy. The east side is very nice, so you might want to check that out. The cost of living is actually very high in Rhode Island, compared to salary.

Wow, I was actually thinking of moving to NC from RI lol that's funny. But RhodyGirl is right, the job market isn't great. I would definitely secure a job first before you move here. Check out lifespan.org or carenewengland.org for the hospital listings. There are historic areas on the East Side of Providence. There's also lots of college students there too because Brown University and Rhode Island School of Design are nearby, not to mention Johnson and Wales University downtown. Good luck to you!

Right now, RI is the worst place for nurses looking for jobs according to a recent survey. I think it depends on your skills and experience. But, if your planning on moving up here, you should probably also get a license in Massachusetts also. It might give you more opportunity.

Have you had any luck with finding a job in RI? I'm thinking about relocating there in a year (June 2012) and was wondering if you've had any success. What kind of field are you in? I saw that Miriam is a Magnet hospital- have you heard anything about that? Good luck in your search!
