Moving to Jacksonville

Welcome to Jax! I am not sure why you are moving here, but just an FYI -> Jacksonville = Duval County = Jacksonville....in other words, the city IS the county and as a result, Jacksonville is the largest city in sq mi in the country. Where you choose to work could have a LOT to do with WHERE in Jax you live.

In the downtown area, you have UF-Shands. This puppy has the busiest ER in town. I found job postings on the net for St Vincents. I am not sure where that hospital is, but I believe it is on the Southside. Mayo is on the East (near the beaches) and I believe they are hiring. I am not sure if Orange Park Medical is hiring, but unless you live on the westside, the commute there would be a MAJOR PIA!

I read an article the other day that the US Navy is having a hard time recruiting civilian nurses to work at their hospitals. We have NAS-JAX here, so you could try there.

Actually, I will be living in the St. Augustine area. I have been hearing a lot about hospitals on a hiring freeze. Is this related to new grads only? I am looking for a full time postion w/o benefits. Do you know anything about Baptist South?

Hey there. Baptist South is one of the newest Hospitals in Jacksonville and would be a great location for someone who lives in St. Augustine. I have heard that census' are down in hospitals not only in Jacksonville, but all over Florida. I haven't heard of a hiring freeze but I do know that there are limited positions at all of the hospitals in the area. You may have to take what you can get for now and then transfer into the ER whenever a position opens. Have you checked into Flagler Hospital?

Baptist south is awesome but right now they don't have any openings in the ER. They have L&D, PACU, Med Surg and ICU.

I work at Baptist Downtown and they do have an opening in the ED for night shift but that might be a little far for you.

Jacksonville hospitals seem to be going through a hiring freeze at this time. I have applied at every hospital here in Jacksonville and you'd think with 30+ years experience I wouldn't have a problem. I'm currently looking outside of Jacksonville for employment.

That is what is the cover story. You HAVE TO talk with the manager to get the job. If you go to the nurse recruiter or you ask anyone else they will tell you that. You talk with the manager and they will tell you that there is a hiring freeze for all non-patient care jobs.

So far that is what I have heard. The freeze is for non-clinical.

I've been turned down by form email from 3 Baptist hospitals in this area. Nurse managers don't return phone calls.

hey all, I too have moved to the Jacksonville area (just bit south of Julington Creek). Are there any ICU nurses out there? I wouldn't mind getting a bit of first hand information.

my family is also relocating to jax. i think we are looking at the mandarin area. i will be graduating nursing school in sept here in va. i am wondering if i would be better off staying in va for a year to get experience as a nurse or if i would have a chance of getting a job in jax as a new nurse. the decision is really scaring me. my husband is ready to move back to his home town but knowing how the nursing field is right now i am a little hesitant to move. right now we do not have much of a hiring freeze in my area and jobs are still here for new grads
