To obtain an AA all students must complete certain core/required courses. Additionally, there are a certain number of hours that must be completed with various other classes. The courses you should take to complete the additional hours should coorispond to the prerequesit classes of the major you are are ultimately wanting to enroll in. In other words, someone who wants to major in business would still have an AA at the end of 2 years but some of the courses that he/she took would differ from someone who is planning to major in nursing. If you currently are enrolled in an AA track and it says "nursing" that means that you are probably on the right track. Hang in there and good luck.:)

Hey there. Baptist South is one of the newest Hospitals in Jacksonville and would be a great location for someone who lives in St. Augustine. I have heard that census' are down in hospitals not only in Jacksonville, but all over Florida. I haven't heard of a hiring freeze but I do know that there are limited positions at all of the hospitals in the area. You may have to take what you can get for now and then transfer into the ER whenever a position opens. Have you checked into Flagler Hospital?

I feel that NICU would be a wise choice. NICU and Mother-Baby services certainly go hand in hand. Who knows, maybe you will decide to become a NNP instead... Med/Surg could also help (especially with time management).

I live in Jacksonville. I work at Shands Jacksonville. Jacksonville's hospitals (and what I hear is that all of FL's hospitals) census' are down. A good majority of us at Shands are being cancelled at least once or twice monthly. This has been going on for a couple of months now. As far as I know there has not been a GN program available at any of the local hospitals for the last 2 graduating classes (summer and winter 2008). If I were you, I would keep looking at the local hospital's websites to watch for these programs to be posted. As far as salary, the base pay for new nurses being hired at shands is somewhere between $25 - $26 hourly. Additionally, if you work nights there is a shift diff somewhere around $4 and weekend diff around $6. Historically Shands has had the best shift diffs in town; but I don't know if that is still true. I work nights and had a fair amount of overtime in the early part of last year and I grossed $68,000. The local facilities in town are Baptist medical Center, St. Vincent's, St. Luke's, Memorial medical center, Mayo, and Shands. Orange Park Medical center is near by as well. I also read on a post that Shands Gainesville is hiring for a GN program. Hope this helps in your decision..
