Moving to the Duluth area.

Anyone know of any good places with great benefits to work for in the Duluth area. I guess I'm willing to commute 25-35 mins out. I know Atlanta traffic can be a headache and I prefer to not to be in the metro area.

Any night nurses in this area? Do you miss the traffic when going to and coming from work? Any advice and or suggestions ?

Thank you!!!!!

Hey! I live in Duluth myself. I'm currently in my senior year of nursing school, but I have had experience working nights at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta in Sandy Springs, and days at Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville.

I'll start by talking about commute:

- Northeast GA is roughly 35 miles north of Duluth (kinda far.) But for me, it takes me ~10 min to get onto the interstate, and then another 30 minutes to get to the hospital for day shift. I have never run into any traffic, and even if there was any... you're driving against traffic ;) However, if you were to commute there for nights from Duluth, you would be driving in the direction of traffic, so you'd likely have to plan for a longer commute.

- Children's is Westbound, and not nearly as far away from Duluth. I usually leave the house around 17:50-18:00 and make it to the hospital by 18:20-18:30ish. The only traffic I run into is on I-285, like, one exit away from where I am getting off from the interstate. So, with that being said, traffic honestly is not a problem for me. I can't say the same about traffic going home, since I only work until 2AM!

Both hospitals are excellent places to work and both offer great benefits, from insurance and retirement plans to special employee discounts on goods and attraction tickets. Not to mention, St. Joseph's Emory and Northside (HUGE L&D hospital) are also in Sandy Springs, across the street from Children's!

Also, this past summer, Northeast Georgia Medical Center opened a second campus in Braselton, which is located on the route to the Gainesville campus (meaning that it is closer - think Mall of Georgia area). New hospital, great facilities :)

If you want an even closer commute... There is Gwinnett Medical Center in Duluth (at the intersection of Peachtree Industrial and Pleasant Hill), and Gwinnett Medical Center in Lawrenceville (about 20 minutes if no traffic, using local roads). Emory Johns Creek is roughly 10 minutes away from Gwinnett Medical Duluth. North Fulton is about 15-25 min away.

That's all I can think off from the top of my head, but I hope that gives you a good start!

where are you in nursing school? I'm in my last semester too! Im getting an ASN but also have a BS in business management. I'll start my BSN when I secure a job :) do you know if the hospitals you mentioned really take ASN grads (maybe you know?) Northside and NE Ga health post that they do! I've heard they both are great hospitals.

I go to nursing school in Athens at Georgia Regents University (soon to be re-named Augusta University). Now that it's the school year, whenever I have to work, I typically stay at my parents' house in Duluth since the drive is easier that way.

From what I've heard, Children's prefers to hire BSN RNs... but I know a nurse who was recently hired who graduated with an ASN - she had to sign a contract stating that she would obtain her BSN within the next two years! So it's possible! And yes, I have definitely met ASN RNs at Northeast Georgia. Northside is definitely a great healthcare system to work at!
