Hi I'm a senior in nursing school and will be graduating this December 2010!! :) Me and my sister were moving to the dallas area and need any and all information we can obtain from nurses who live and work in the area!! We are not sure where we want to move yet, we were thinking Irving.... I also need advice on area hospitals. I am definitely going to work in an ICU. I appreciate any help!

Nursing jobs for new grad RNs in the Dallas metro area are growing more difficult to find due to several issues.

First and foremost, an abundance of nurses have been relocating to the Dallas area from out of state, which is flooding the local job market with too many nurses when the demand is declining. Second, plenty of nursing schools exist in and around the Dallas area that churn new graduate nurses into the local employment pipeline every few months, which further saturates the job market around here. Moreover, hospital census is down at many facilities because less people having elective procedures performed, more people are unemployed and uninsured due to the economy, and people are staying away from healthcare facilities unless it involves a dire emergency. Finally, tons of experienced nurses live in the Dallas area who can hit the ground running without orientation or expensive training, whereas more hospitals are now deeming new grad RNs as too costly to train.

Here are some hospitals in and around Dallas County. Some of these are suburban hospitals and others are big-city facilities. You might want to call each facility or visit each hospital's website to see what types of jobs they're offering to new grads at the present time.

Commuter RN.

You are an awesome resource for nurses in the DFW area. I read your posts with interest, and always find you have great info/advice.

Thanks!!

Internships that begin in January will start accepting applications around September. It is pretty much the only doorway into the hospital system in major cities in Texas at this time and competition is very fierce and GPA based along with other things. I would encourage you to decide where you wish to live and then start applying for the internships in that area.

Just to give you an idea of the competition, for the May graduates, we accepted 20 people out of 150 applicants. It isn't the kind of numbers you hear about in CA, but unless you have a truly exceptional application, I wouldn't count on getting hired. Also, at least at my hospital you are not guaranteed any particular area. After the residency period, the hospital will put you where they think you fit the best and where there are openings.

Thanks for the information!!
