Move back to NYC???

Hello all:

I lived in NYC from 97-00. I am from WI and moved back home to pursue nursing degree (couldn't afford to live in NY and go to school). I am really thinking about moving back but have some questions???

1. How on earth do you afford rent? I have heard of housing through the hospital.....is this true and if yes which ones? When I lived in NYC I was paying 1650 for a studio off 50th and Lex--I made more money back then but was dirt poor, don't know if I want to be so poor again.

2. I already have a BS in Business. I am going for my ADN now. I have noticed jobs seem to require a BSN, do you think my BS would count as having 4 year degree. I already did management and don't want to do it again. I have emailed hospitals but they don't get back to me...your thoughts?

3. I am interested in Cardiac.....where would you work???? In WI are pt ratio in Neuro (I am an intern) is awful (at least 9 pts per nurse and only 2 aids for 50 beds). Yuck, Yuck....In my dreams I work in a hospital with---lift teams, iv teams, barcoding for meds, typed orders (nothing hadwritten), weekend program and a ratio that doesn't kill you or the pts--does such a place exsist?

Thanks:)

Oh yeah I would live in Brooklyn too:0

I'm in WI also, and agree with you completely!!! My hospital is understaffed and are on a hiring freeze. We have new RN grads leaving because there are no RN positions for them to advance to (from LPN).

Sorry, I don't have any NY info - but am curious to see what everyone else has to say. Good luck

Well I live in Queens, and it is marginally cheaper (you can certainly get more than a studio for that 1650). I also have a 2nd income (my husband). As far as housing thru the hospitals, I know New York Presbyterian and NYU have housing, but you have to wait (on a list).

I can't believe that they are asking for a minimum BSN during these turbid times. I wouldn't worry about it too much.

I don't know anything about Brooklyn, sorry!!
