Micro Fall 2010

Figured I'd go ahead and start a thread for those of us taking Micro in the fall.

What books are you guys using? Anyone know of helpful sites, videos, etc?

I failed my 1st Micro exam, so did the majority of the class.

Now I'm preparing for the next one on Viruses.

Gotta keep it moving, not getting discouraged. :)

Just took my first test 6 chapters. a lot was not covered in lecture, had to guess on some questions. But I got financial aid $ and a good eval at work so overall I good day.

Midterm Practical in lab today. Got a B, Woohoo! Ordinarily a B would have upset me but I barely studied so I'm happy.

How is everyone doing? Got the results of Lecture Exam #2 today- 100 points! Woohoo

5 points were extra credit but I did way better than I thought I did. I need to stop doubting myself.

We just had a test on the DNA/genetics chapter, control of microbial growth and parts of another chapter. I got a low B, which is better than I expected. I think this test will be curved since no one got an A. I think I understand the material, but I get tripped up with vaguely worded questions, usually two of the answers are so similar that I confuse myself and overthink it.

These past few chapters have been a real snooze, I keep waiting for the exciting diseases to come up. Lab has been fun though.:)

Best, L.

I'm getting ready for exam 2, and we start our "unknown" this week. I was falling asleep in class today I need a break to recharge. 8 weeks in 7 weeks of lecture to go!!!

Anyone started their unknown yet? Just started mine. Ugh, messed up on my gram stain and had to do it twice. Lost 5 points just for repeating the gram stain.

I can't believe you lost 5 points for repeating a Gram's stain that stinks. We had to do 2-3 the week before we started our unknown. We've had three labs for our unknown, the staining gets easier each week. We have completed most of the tests we need to do. We have very little guidance mostly read the lab book and work on our own. I can't wait for this class to be over.

Yep, everytime you have to repeat the gram stain, you lose 5 points. Also lose points for any other test you have to repeat. Not as many as the gram stain though. I did my 2nd test, carb fermentation correctly and did not lose points there. Whew! We only did the gram stain once before this. I think I have Enterobacter aerogenes or E coli. Gotta figure out what other tests to do next. We have no help either with the unknown, same thing, go to our lab manual and figure out what we need to do. I'm ready for this semester to be over too. Lecture has been great though. We have a field trip to Quest Diagnostics next week. Looking forward to that.

I could use a field trip, I have been so tired at lab it's a night class. We can do staining any lab, we cannot repeat other tests though. I think we get points taken off for asking questions??

Mangopeach, When do you finish?

Classes finish at the end of this month. Can't wait! Finals are the first week of December.

Figured out my unknown today!!!! YAYYYY - I was afraid I would do the wrong test and end up losing more points but I did the right tests and figured it out! Whew! This is a big chunk of our grade so I didn't wanna lose any more points repeating a test.
