A sixty eight year old man came to the clinic to check his blood pressure, he wore a small gold looking hoop earing on his left ear. As part of the routine care for diabetic and hypertensive clients I questioned him about his eyesight. His response was that he had perfect eyesight, he only required reading glasses for small prints, as a matter of fact his eyesight had greatly improved since he starting wearing his earing.

Wow, I didn't know that. I had heard it was to pay Charon the boatman if they drowned at sea, but that doesn't explain gold earrings past the Greeks!

the gold earings were worn by sailors so if they died at sea, if there bodies were found the gold could be used to pay for a decent barial
I lived in a place once (fishing village) where everyone in the village wore the same pattern sweater. When I asked why, they explained it was so that if we drowned, they'd be able to id our bodies as belonging to such-and-such village and bring us home. Ew.
who'da'thunked there was so much information about pirates!
