MDC Fall 2011 =)

Hi guys! Who else is applying for MDC Fall 2011?

I am also applying for FIU-- I was accepted last year to MDC but for financial and personal reasons could not attend. :'( Who else will be applying to Generic FT? Please state what program you will be applying to!

I will be taking the TEAS sometime in March, in which I will also be taking the HESI A2 for FIU. So I might as well be studying for both, lol. Anybody taken the TEAS at MDC? Share your experiences here! :) I will be using a general book for nursing school entrance exams... it's by Barron... and I will be studying my math from a nursing calculation book, and my sciences from my anatomy, biology, and other notes. Is it true there is geology on the exam? How irrelevant... lol

Well good luck to us all! :heartbeat

Shoes: They sell all-white shoes in the bookstore. I forget the name of the manufacturer of the shoes. They seem pretty comfortable (when I try on).

It is good to have them from day one because you practice skills for "FUNDAMENTAL NURSING SKILLS LAB". The lab requires a lab coat & closed-toed shoes for admission to the lab. If you are practicing "occupied-bed making", it is good to be wearing the proper footwear (just like you would wear in the hospital).

ZIP UP shirt/jacket REQUIRED FOR CLINICALS:

Only available at the bookstore. Lab coat can be bought at bookstore with MDC emblem. I've heard a FEW students buy elsewhere without MDC emblem. Buy pants NOT AT BOOKSTORE if you want. I did not find the pants that were comfortable & fit well at the bookstore.

WHAT THEY DON'T TELL YOU:

You really should buy a stethoscope & blood pressure cuff before school starts. The first exam in "FUNDAMENTALS LAB SKILLS" is "vitals". (blood pressure requires blood pressure cuff + stethoscope). And some professors for PEHA (Physical Exam & Health Assessment) like you to actually do "exams on other students". So you need the stethoscope for that, too... to assess the heart, abdomen, etc. Not to mention in the real world (clinicals? hospitals!) you are likely to need a stethoscope.

GOOD LUCK.

OOPS accidentally clicked submit two times.

awww that is so sad. idk why the nursing program is under 12 credits. its not fair because it IS full time.... i've seen students in the f/t program have to sign up for those "sls" 1 credit courses just to make up the time... unfaiiiir.

What does "sls" 1 credit courses mean? I need to take at least 6 credits to 9, but I am only taking actually six, and I hate to take another class that will tie me up in studying?

I believe SLS is "student life skills".

Meaning you learn how to be a good student. Studying skills. Time management. Test taking strategies. or whatever.

If you barely graduated from high school, you should take this class.

If you have a college degree, it is a waste of your time unless you are just looking for that "easy A" to fill up the extra credits you need.

OK, thanks. Yes, I have my ADN, working towards getting the BSN. Thought it was another certification useful to applying for jobs.

Does anyone have the syllabi for the following courses/professors? I emailed them all over a week ago respectfully asking for a copy so I might be able to use my time wisely for the holiday break but, I only received 2 out of 5. :( Please if you have a copy can you email it to me so my first week of nursing school won't be like the first day at junior high?

Syllabi needed:

NUR1060C Adult Health Assessment Cassandra Sturrup (I heard this class is a challenge)

NUR1142 Intro to Nursing Math and Pharmacology Annette Tomlinson (Probably conversions, etc.)

NUR1025L Fundamentals of Nursing Clinical Lab Torrie Holloman

Whatever anyone can do would be greatly appreciated...my email is [email protected]

Thanks again! :D

Honestly I wouldn't bother. Enjoy your break and let the professors enjoy theirs. You will be learning a whole lot of info for the next couple of yrs, and not receiving 3 of the syllabi isn't going to make your first semester any worse lol.

If I were you I would focus mainly on organizing your self, looking up helpful websites about pharm and physical assessment. Get to know the library, where the nursing books are, etc. you can look up YouTube videos on health to toe assessment or on IV fluids you will need to know. Lot more useful than a syllabi :) good luck.

Twilliams, I do not blame you wanting to get a head start. You can try by learning your landmarks for the assessment class, that you can find in the book or even on youtube, this will be important, know where the landmarks of the heart are and locations of breath sounds. Conversions, it is good to start learning those, ml to mg, and so forth....especially if you are not good on math. The internet has one for nurses, unfortunately I cannot remember, but try googling dosage calculations. Everyone has a different style, if you feel taking advantage of the next week, I cannot say I blame you.

Good luck.
