Math Help! :(

Published

I was hoping someone could help me with the following math issues I am having. I caculated out the problem - I just need to know if it is correct before I move on:crying2: The problem is BOLD.

Thank you in advanced for your help. It is GREATLY appreciated!!! :bowingpur

Order: Gentamicin 80 mg IV in 3 divided doses

Child's weight: 28 pounds

Safe dose range: 2-2.5 mg/kg every 8 hours

Available: Gentamicin 10 mg/mL

A) What is the safe does Range?

I caculated the following:

12.73 * 2 = 25.46 mg

12.73 * 2.5 - 31-83 mg

So the range would be 25.46mg - 31.83mg (I think)

B) Is this does safe?

80mg X 3 = 26.7mg which calls between the safe dose range so Yes.

C) If this dose is safe, how man mL would you give the child per dose?

80mg/10mg * 1ML = 8mL

Specializes in med/surg, telemetry, IV therapy, mgmt.

I see a small mistake in the safe dose range. I would not round off until the very end of the problem. I come up with the low dose range as 25.45 and not 25.46. As I said, this is because I did not round off until the very end and I did the entire problem on my calculator.

The other mistake, and this would be a medication error, is with part C: If this dose is safe, how man mL would you give the child per dose?

26.7 mg
(dose desired)
/10 mg
(dose on hand)
x 1 mL
(amount the dose on hand comes in)
= 2.67 mL,
round off to
2.7 mL
(amount to give)

Thank you so much for your help! I get confused as to which formula to use.

I really appreciate your help!

Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!!! :rcgtku:
