NSO does carry correctional nursing malpractice ins.. I have been with them for 18 yrs. Perhaps your state is not one they cover? Have you called them directly? Hopefully this can be cleared up for you and that there other options. Please let us know the outcome.

I called NSO as I have been covered by them for a number of years, and have only recently started working in corrections,

they told me that they used to cover corrections until recently, but they no longer do, they said if you go to sign up for their insurance now that is one of the questions that they ask new people and will exclude them from getting insurance. existing people like us are also no longer covered but how we "discover" this change is more of a grey area. I did not go there in my discussion with them

sue

I checked on line at my information with them and it spells out corrections...

Guess it's email time.

Thanks to all of you for your replies.and Yes Proliability has good coverage at a very good price so I will change. NSO was not very helpful, I too had carried their ins for a long while and found out accidently that I was not covered. Not a good thing. Thanks again :):)

I apologize to my fellow posters. I did call NSO and was told that I just made my renewal by days! This is why I didn't see any info. with my renewal this time. He said that I will not be renewed at the end of this year. In fact he stated that to find MI will be extremely difficult anywhere because they have "taken a hit with all of the lost malpractice cases from correctional nurses that no one will cover such a high risk profession." Have to tell you I was at a loss for words! I am stunned that correctional nurses are being sued and losing these lawsuites MORE than other high risks areas. I don't even know where to start with 'blame'. For some reason I am taking this personally. I and many corr. nurses work hard, don't assume anything, keep up with our assessment skills, and really do try to make a difference. On occasion I have seen the nurse pass through looking only for a paycheck and to 'socialize'. This has been my observation with 18 yrs. in corrections so I am not meaning to step on any posters on this list toes. This should be a wake up call to all of us in this specialty.

i cant believe NSO is not covering correctional health anymore! wow i guess litigation rates have increased alot!

would it not be better to go WITHOUT , which can make you a target? (that is, if you have no assets).

when i worked in a very high litigation region of the country, all my fellow ER nurses chose to NOT be covered because it made them targets for lawsuits. the ER nurses who werent covered were never called to court-the plaintiff would just file suit against the facility instead-going where the payoff is

you know that is the current debate we are having at work. One good thing about the NSO policy was it covered you on duty and off. I just felt I had a little piece of mind having the policy. Too many people are suing and how would they know if you had MI? I find it hard to believe that the person suing that their attyns. would tell their client...hey wait let's not sue nurse whoever because she doesn't have MI. I always looked at having the policy in that I worked hard for my home, car, extras and for some $ hungry attny fool encouraging a lawsuit just because; gave me some breathing room. I do not trust managment to back me or imdemnify (?sp) me. They don't want to risk losing $ on during their tenure. Also what if you stopped and assisted in a medical emergency in the mall (yes I know that there are Good Samaritan laws) and the person sues you anyways. Oh I could go on...:wink2:

Straight off the NSO site:

"We're sorry, but coverage is not available if you work in a prison, correctional facility or detention center. Thank you for your interest in the professional policy offered through Nurses Service Organization".

Emailed them last night and it was bounced back....

To put it simply I am both very upset, and very happy to have stumbled across this thread at 0330. Very upset because I had no idea that NSO is not covering Corrections Nurses anymore, and very happy that I have this info and can do something about it! Thanks for the heads up! Now I am off to google a new company!
