LPN Anesthesia Tech

I'm currently going to school to get my LPN and eventually my RN. I want to be a Nurse Anesthetist in the long run. I am doing a code of ethics paper on Nursing and I just happened to come across this website where someone was talking about Anesthesia Tech. I had never heard of this before and I am interested in finding out more about it since this would give me first hand experience in Anesthesia. I'm in Tampa Bay, Florida. I know USF has a Department of Anesthesia but I can't find out from their website if they offer a Anesthesia Tech Program. If you know more information on Anesthesia Tech and where I could go to get Certified let me know. I'm also interested if this is something I can work on while I'm getting my LPN or if I have to do it after I am already an LPN.

Thanks,

Amber

The job description for our anesthesia techs is basically that they help turnover rooms/anesthesia machines. With additional training, they are allowed to do finger stick labs, start IVs, assist with line insertion (basically setting up the tubing and pressure bag, handing things to the anesthesiologist). They also help during induction by handing over the ETT and holding cricoid pressure, but they are not present during the case and aren't allowed to do anything with medications. I don't think any of them are LPNs. Most started as patient care assistants and were given additional training.

Same with us, but no added hands on pt duties. If you want to become a CRNA try to get your foot in the door of an ICU, since that is where you will need to work once you become an RN before you can get in CRNA school.

Good luck.....................
