low AFI

I am a fairly new nurse (LPN for one year RN for 2 months). I have 2 weeks left to go with my pregnancy and got placed on bedrest for a low AFI. I just graduated from nursing school and all I know about an AFI is that it is supposed to be between 8-24.

Is low AFI something you commonly see and if so any problems? I've been trying to find info about it but can't seem to find too much. Any info or resources for info would be appreciated.

Amniotic fluid serves many purposes. It acts as insulation dampening sounds, protecting baby from jarring, and maintaining a constant body temperature.

It helps to cushion both the baby and umbilical cord, preventing the cord from becoming "trapped" between the baby's body and the wall of the uterus. An intact amniotic sac also protects the baby from infection.

It is impossible for us to answer any specific questions about your pregnancy. I would encourage you to contact your OB or midwife for further explanation of why your AFI is low, what potential s/s of complications you should be watchful for, and what your plan of care will be.
