Loan Forgiveness????

I just was interviewed for a job as a GN and asked the nurse recruiter if they offered a loan forgiveness or bonus program. She said no. I was honestly disapointed because my intent all thru nursing school was to take a job with loan forgiveness so I wouldn't have another bill each month. I wondered how I would go about seeing if any local hospitals have such a program and wondered if anyone here was able to take advantage of such a good thing!!

Does your state have one directly? I know that many do and here in NH if I remember correctly, you just have to be working- does not matter if the company has one or not.

I am planning on the same thing!

I don't know? I never heard of states getting involved. How would I even find out?

Florida has one. It's called the Nursing Student Loan Forgiveness Program. They pay $4000 a year up to 4 years for working fulltime in certain hospitals/other areas. Honestly, most of the hospitals in my area are on the list, though not all. It looks like a great deal and I'm planning on taking advantage of it.;)

(I found it by googling "nursing loan forgiveness".)

Look on your states Board of Nursing site, that is where ours is located in Kentucky.

Ok so I emailed Delaware state board of nursing, and he wrote me right back with this reply...

Hello,

We are a regulatory agency only for licensure and such. I am sorry but I do not have the information you requested.

So I'm not sure where to look now...anyone in Delaware ever find such a program?

Here are some things I found by searching on the internet:

The first two are basically the same - the first came directly from the Delaware department of Health & Services site and the other from HRSA:

http://dhss.delaware.gov/dhss/dph/hsm/opslrpnur.html

http://bhpr.hrsa.gov/nursing/loanrepay.htm

This one is probably not too applicable to you since you are already an RN, but someone mentioned that some states will finance your education in return for a service committment and Delaware does this (just as a FYI):

http://www.doe.k12.de.us/high-ed/nursing.htm

I think this site is more about searching for Health Shortage sites which is how you can apply for the HRSA loan repayment program. It can be worth looking at if you want to work in a rural underserved area ( which is where most of the federal loan repayment programs will be):

Another option is to look up the websites of hospitals in Delaware and look at the benefits they offer. Not all hospitals do loan forgiveness but some do (I've seen some that do and don't around where I live).

Good luck!

Hmmm well Thank you Very much but those don't really apply to what I'm looking for. I don't have the option to relocate and there are no opportunitys in NJ or Delaware at the moment.

I guess I will just pay off my student loan. Certainly the raise I'm getting going from LPN to RN will take care of that.. =)

I have heard that there are some government programs that will give some student loan relief if the facility you work for is considered a "rural hospital". Thats all the information I currently have...gotta do some research on my own as well.

Hey,

I know where I live in utah they do a perkins loan through the financial aid department. You just take out the loan like you would any other student loan, but then when you have graduated they give you some paperwork to fill out so that all of your perkins loans can be forgiven. This applies only to certain fields such as special education, nursing and law enforcement. They do it incrementally so each year they take off around 15% as long as you are working full time for a max of 5 years. As you get into your 4th year it starts to increase to 20% paid in the year. Anyway all technical stuff aside I think it has been awesome because that was 10,000 I didn't have to pay. Good luck
