Licensing for frequent mover...

Nursing Students ADN/BSN

I am a military spouse currently in a BSN program in GA. The school has us select what state we are testing for, and I intend to test for GA since I think we will be here at least another year. My concern is when we move it will more than likely be to another state. And then after three years we will move to another state...I know I can work for the VA and be a DOD civilian no matter what state I'm licensed in, but if that's not what I choose to pursue how will I go about seeking employment in each state? I have no idea where I would even begin and although I am still in school I like to try and know what I might have to face down the road. Thanks for the help!

I agree with your plan - plan to get your initial license in GA since that is where you'll be. For future relocations, you will need to plan ahead and work through the process of obtaining licensure in different states. (but you will only take NCLEX once)

Some states participate in the multistate licensure compact - info here:

Keep in mind, though, that the compact only makes a difference as long as you maintain a permanent residence in your "home" compact state. If you move to another state (without continuing to maintain a permanent home in the old state), even another compact state, you still have to apply for a new license.
