Level of intelligence

Going through nursing school, I have to say that it's overwhelming. They throw a ton of information at you all at once, most of which aren't on the exams (they don't tell you what information will be on the exams, either). It's so overwhelming that sometimes I think you have to be a genius just to pass these classes.

Then I meet nurses who are... well, let's just say they're not the brightest people I've ever met. Some of them have horrible grammer (they couldn't pass a 4th grade english class for the life of them), can't do math, and just have absolutely no common sense whatsoever. I worry for the people that these nurses take care of.

I've also seen some people post on this very site, posting things that don't make any sense with horrible grammer and exhibit no intelligence whatsoever... yet they're nurses. How the hell does that happen?

No disrespect meant towards anyone whatsoever, I'm not trying to upset anyone, but let's face facts, there are some less-than-average nurses out there, so how do they do it? Admittedly, I don't see them very often, but they're out there. That just scares me and confuses me at the same time.

How the hell did they get through nursing school?

I don't have much to say on this since I'm just beginning my nursing classes tomorrow, but I can say that when I get out there I hope those type of nurses aren't being crowd control. They are what give all the rest a bad name. I had to call someone out one time b/c they said that they don't see why nurses are all hyped and that they aren't s**t. That struck a chord with me and I just had to tell them that not all nurses are like that and you probably just encountered a bad seed of sorts. Then they went on to say that the whole hospital was like that and only the nurses of tomorrow could change it. "As far as I'm concerned", he said "anybody could do their job." :madface: Well, how about your job, mister!

You think nursing has dummies, try the other health care field vocations. Those schools are just churning people out like butter, promising them the world almost, and then when they get out there all they find is that they gave ~20k to a school that only wanted their 20k and could care less about them later. It's all about the profit! And then that makes it hard for people like my mom who has been doing Phlebotomy for 30 years and has a hard time finding a job with all the increased competition. From what I hear from her and patients, co-workers, and a few bosses when I used to tag along with her to work, she's one of the damn near best phlebotomists you could get. No vein digging needed!

In sum, I blame the schools for graduating dum dums. But hey, what can you do? The schools need to stop worrying about the numbers and instead worry about who they are sending out there into the world to represent their reputation.
