Usually you submit in person and HR will have you themn formally submit in writing usually you give as much notice as they schedule or your pay for example if you get paid Q 2 weeks then 2 weeks is enough, If your schedule comes out for a month at a time then that is correct also . Generally give 30 day notice that is the polite thing to do and while it is frustrating you don't want to burn any bridges that might come back to haunt you in 10 years.

Most places it is customary to give at least 2 weeks notice so they have a prayer of filling in the hole in the schedule if you are in a staff position. If you are in a position that may be more difficult to fill (management?) then give more notice. I do it in writing so I have a paper trail showing I submitted my notice in a timely fashion. I have always made sure the resignation was professional and polite so as not to burn any bridges. If possible I included a reason for leaving ('relocating to another state', 'have accepted a position at xyz hospital', etc.). You don't need to get into the gory details of why.

Also, keep in mind that you never know how an employer might react to you leaving. Sometimes after you give two weeks notice they may ask you to leave after your shift. Some states require an employer to pay you if they do this, some don't.

I'm not saying that would happen, but always be prepared for it.

Also check into your companies policy on your PTO time. I just found out at the home health company I work for that the minute you give your resignation your accumulated PTO time is forfeited!!! Start using it if you are planning on resigning.Unless they will pay you for your unused time. I have always given a two weeks notice but I think this is wrong about the PTO time policy.
