Lasix and Bumex

I read online that there is a national IV Lasix shortage. I hear the substitute we'll be using is Bumex. Has anyone used this much with neonates? Thoughts?

We only use Bumex on those kids in renal failure. We substitute chlorothiazide.

We have used this in our NICU for many years; but as previously posted, we usually use it on babies in renal failure. Both Bumex and Lasix are loop diuretics. Bumex has a rapid onset and shorter duration of action than Lasix. We sometimes have babies on a Bumex drip. If your NICU starts to use this drug, then they need to be very careful with the dosing. 1mg Bumex = 40mg Lasix.

We have switched to single-dose lasix vials to having our pharmacy draw up multiple doses for us...

We do not use bumetanide here. Other places I've worked used it, and as others have stated, you have to be VERY careful, as the doses are much different than Lasix.

I read that Bumex actually has a longer duration...and stays in the neonate's system longer than older patients. Thus the dosing is less frequent.
