Hi:

I was wondering how hard it is to get into L&D as a "new grad". I am currently in the US and just about to finish school here. I have been tossing around ideas as to where I want to practice (what area) and I really liked the L&D rotation.

I will be here about 6 months after I graduate and hope to get into L&D here and was wondering how hard it is to get into the same position once I move back to Canada next June/July and take the boards there in Aug. I will be moving to Calgary.

If you come with L&D experience, it is definitely possible. As a new grad without experience it would be extremely difficult. They would probably want you to start in mother/baby.

thanks for the advice. I accepted a position in the newborn nursery for the months that I am here. I do not mind "working my way up" to L&D, but don't want mother/baby forever.

I finally got my packet prom the nursing board (Alberta) and will get things rolling once I pass my NCLEX in January. Wow how time flies!

My very first job after graduating 16 years ago was in L&D, so it is possible. Being in the right place at the right time helps. I live in Ontario but believe there are nurse recruiters in Alberta who will assist you to find a position. My friend moved there a couple years ago. They even paid for her move and a signing bonus. She was looking for an NICU job and was offered one. She liaised with the recruiter for a few months before going. I'd call / email soon to get the ball rolling.

IN BC you can work postpartum as a new grad and they will put you through L&D classes (specialty). I dont know how long this will last, but at the moment it is possible.

Very possible. Don't let one No discourage you. I have done it, and known many people who have.

Thanks for the encouragement! I am going to see if anyone I know knows someone in that area. Unfortunately, BC is not an option since we built a house in Calgary. I just have to wait for the SLOW paperwork to go through before I move up there so I can practice as a GN.:o
