Lab Work

As a nurse have you had the opportunity to do laboratory work as a nurse? e.g using a petri dish to examine something or other tests to determine the health of a patient.

If not, would research nursing involve this?

All laboratory work is done in the Laboratory by technicians that have had schooling to do the testing.

Clinical Research Nurses develop and implement studies to investigate and provide information on new medications, vaccinations, and medical procedures. They assist in providing evidence-based research that is essential to safe and quality nursing care.

They do not do lab tests.

If you want to work in a laboratory, then look into Medical Laboratory Scientist/ Clinical Laboratory Scientist.

Thanks for that information! I just wasn't sure because I have heard of someone working as an RN in haemodialysis and as an RN in pathology. They studied nursing and a separate course in phlebotomy and another as a clinical/medical laboratory technician. Maybe it's more research nursing.

So would a nurse be providing the samples for the lab technicians to investigate then? e.g blood samples etc.

No. As a general rule Physicians and NPs order labs which are drawn and processed by technicians and return rfesults to the profession who ordered the tests to determin clinical relevance of the results.
