job in another state?

I've been an LPN in Ohio for going on 4 years. I've been looking for another job because the place I work got bought out by new owners and they have cut back almost everyone's hours. I got cut one day per 2 week pay to 36 hours a week, which may not sound like much, but that is about $300 less a month and I was barely paying my bills before and that's even with recently filing bankruptcy to get rid of the credit card bills at least. I like my job for the most part and have a house about 20 miles from work where I've been for 13 years.

Anyway, I finally got a couple calls for interviews next week. Problem is one is about an hour drive east for part-time home health work and I've never done that. The one I'm more interested in is in Indiana and is about a 45 min. drive. It's at a large assisted living facility and looks very nice and I prefer to work in AS over nursing homes. My question is what is all involved in getting a license in another state and costs, time it takes ect. After a quick search I found a site on IN.gov that has a link to endorsement applications. Is this what I need or is there a better place to look? It did say something about paying a $50 fee and a $30 fee to verify your license. I can afford that, but what concerns me as it looks like you have to pay by credit card and I won't have any for several months due to the bk filing. I would just like to get a head's up as I don't want the interview to be a waste of time (and gas) if I can't get the license. Any info or help would be appreciated.

Couldn't you get one of those prepaid cards? OR can you get a bank debit card (which can then also be used as a credit card with the funds dispersed from your bank account)? My bank debit card works that way. If your nursing license is clean, you won't have any trouble as far as endorsement and it is not a complicated process. BUT is there any opportunity to get those hours back? Picking up prn and covering people's summer vacations and illnesses? Offering to work other co-workers holidays? If you like your job, it is close to your home, and it will after all, cost the owners to replace you, then maybe you can work something out with them?

I already asked the DON and she said it was out of her control to give the hours back as they don't want anybody to get into OT. Our census is way down right now and seems to be getting worse. Plus we got denied insurance due to not enough people signing up and we don't have any other real benefits either. I know I would probably have to move and get rid of the house if I got the position too and hate the thought of starting over at my age as I only have about 17 years left to pay on the mortgage. On the other hand the house needs a lot of repairs which I can't afford obviously and now would be the perfect time to dump the house as you can just walk away if you include it in the bk.

Maybe the part-time/prn home health would be the better option (if I go to the interview and get an offer) even though its quite a drive too. I kind of got myself in a predicament with that though as I have two interviews at the same time (the home health and a production job). I may cancel the production interview as that's a long shot as its over an hour drive. But it sounds like it pays very good and I'm almost to the point of giving up on nursing as I've only had a real full-time position for a year and a half of the 4 years I've had my license. Plus just going to work and doing your job and not having too worry about anybody but yourself sounds good for a change. I did'nt realize how much stress nursing actually puts you under and runs you down when I went into it...

I am confused. How will the facility be covering for anyone's time off. Or will they just not cover that time and everyone will work short? Can you pick up prn hours at another nearby facility? If you move, will it be difficult for you to rent? You only have 17 years left on your mortgage and you are going to walk without seeing if a judge would grant a modification. If you lower the payment, could you then afford the repairs? Hate to see you give up, especially if it is reluctant on your part.

The facility hired a part-time nurse to take two days each from the 3rd shift nurses so that we won't go into OT for the 4 hours a pay. Does'nt seem like it really saves them that much and most all the employees and upset about it, but I guess they are in it to make the most profit possible. Cutting back on food and supplies for the residents and upping the rent is'nt helping in keeping residents and getting new ones either imo. I had a prn job. but they let me go due to low census also. Nobody else seems to be advertising for help in this area. Maybe I should just go to all the nearby facilities and drop my resume off?

As for the bk, you are not allowed to get any new loans or do a modification while the bk is pending. I could look into it after I guess. My payment and rate is'nt all that bad right now. Every year it changes though due to insurance, taxes, escrow, ect. I'm sure even a refinance would'nt help that much. I need a couple hundred a month to make a difference, not $50 or so. I forgot to mention I also have a home equity loan attached to the house which I have hardly dented in the 7 years I've had it and it is supposed to be paid off in about 3 years. No way it is now so I'm going to have to do a refinance or something when that is due.

I think a BK judge can work with you to get the bank to do loan modifications. That is a question for your BK atty. That's why I was asking. But then I think it depends on which chapter you are filing for.

Sorry to hear about what the facility did. Sounds like all they did was to take everyones' hours away to create an additional part-time position. That doesn't save any money for the facility in wages but it might affect insurance benefits as some places do not offer part-timers any insurance benefits. I do like the idea of sending your resume out locally vs driving a great distance for work (rising gas prices) or even having to move.

I have unfortunately worked at a place that did the same thing with resident's meals. PB&J for lunch for example. You can only get away with so much and then families start to notice that mom or dad isn't being fed as well as they used to be or being given the same amount of care. It eventually comes full circle.

OP, a lot can be done in 17years..1. You can become an RN and earn maybe a better amount and pay for another house much faster.

2. You could get a better job with better working conditions and have a rested mind and get a good house and good mortgage.

3. You could do a whole lot in ONLY:eek: 17years.

I can see your point Katie5, but I just turned 41 and know I'll have to wait at least 3-4 years to get a decent rate on a new house if I dump the current one. And if I'm still single I know I'll most likely have to take another 30 year term out to be able to afford it. If I do that I'll have to work into my mid-70's, but if I stick it out here I might be able to retire in my mid-to late 60's.
