Hi everyone,
I am soon to be an ASN graduate and I am getting a little worried. I live in the Atlanta, Ga area and have heard many horror stories about the scarcity of new grad jobs in this area. I have started applying and so far no call backs. Granted, most hospitals are not taking new grad applications until March, but like I said before I haven't heard about anything good. I was talking to fellow student that was declined for a postition b/c she was not a BSN..this is at at the only Children's Hosptial in this area and she really wanted to go in to PEDS....I was so dissapointed . I am so nervous now!!! Did I make a mistake by getting my Associate's degree instead of my bachelor's? I thought that H/R did not make a difference between BSN and ASN nurses...I guess I was wrong. Does any other soon to be graduates feel the same way?

I wouldn't pay attention to rumors. I'm sorry for your friend but she should have investigated that particular hospital's hiring policies before getting her ADN if that is where she had her heart set on working. There are peds units in most hospitals so I'd bet she can still work in that field while she is getting her BSN.
Doing online applications isn't always the most effective way to meet people in the know so if you haven't been going in person I'd consider that. Did you make a good impression on a nurse manager on any of the units where you did clinicals? Thats where many of the students I know got their foot in the door. Good luck and remember to keep a positive attitude.

Thanks for the great advice. I planned on going to the H/R department in person on my spring break which is the second week in March...so I think that will be a good time since they start taking applications in March. I have been talking to the nurse manager where I am doing my clinicals and she told me to do a good job and there is a chance she will hire me. I get so depressed b/c I hear so many negative things and I shouldn't. I will keep a positive attitude and keep my options open. Thanks again for the advice.

Hey gapeach,
I assume you're talking about CHOA? I have an interview with them on Tuesday for their October residency program. They have stopped taking applications for May/August grads so the next time they are hiring is for December grads.
No clue if they only hire BSNs or not. I have a BA in sociology and will have a BSN in August...maybe that is why I got a callback? Plus I speak Spanish. I hope I get the job though, it is my dream position/city.

In Miami, once a year they have a job fair for nurses where all the hospitals set up booths to recruit new grads for their hospital. This fair extends from West Palm Beach to the Keys in terms of the locale of the hospitals and rehabs etc. The last few years they did this at Parrot Jungle. I haven't been in nursing for several years but I'm a Gideon and we set up a table there to give away pocket NTs to the new grads if they wanted them for free. There were never less than 50 booths set up. I'm not joking and each of them was giving away something like a pen or cup that had their hospital name imprinted on it. From what I was observing, they were very eager to have these folks come and work for them. I am kind of amazed to hear that the H/R department isn't quick to get you started. Doesn't that happen elsewhere?
