IV therapy

Published

Hey this is my first time posting so hopefully it works. I'm an rpn new grad and I was interested in becoming IV certified, does anyone know where I can do that in Toronto??

Out west individual hospitals certify LPNs, after comptency is demonstrated to the CNEs. The course was also offered at local community colleges BUT you still had to obtain your hospital's consent to perform the skill.

So check with your employer.

Specializes in Acute Care, Rehab, Palliative.

The hospital I work for in Ontario does their own certification classes. You take the classroom theory( about 2 hours) and get 3 starts witnessed by an RN and you are good to go.

If your workplace does not offer training check the Canadian vascular access association website for a list of courses http://www.cvaa.info/LEARNING/Courses/tabid/66/Default

OK, when you say IV therapy are you meaning med preparation and hanging or just starting?

These are things that are covered in our basic education. Hospitals expect you to have an idea about this. The courses they provide are more like certification to ensure that you perform the skill to their requirements. Capital Health (when it still existed) ran workshops for their LPNs to ensure that they were all on the same level when it came to IV meds and IV starts. Workshop and mentoring on the job.
