Is it worth it?..

Hi allnurses,

I would really like to hear your opinion regarding something I am sort of indecisive/unsure about... Basically I've been a nurse for a little over a year and the past 7 months I've been a new RN in a Complex Continuing Care/Palliative care unit. I've grown to be comfortable, confident and built positive rapport/relationships with my coworkers in that unit. However, I have left that unit 2 weeks ago and got recently hired in a medicine unit. I had just finished my 6th 12hr orientation in that unit and will be starting on my own soon. I have been really anxious starting anew again and medicine is alot more faster paced environment (more than what I'm used to) I know deciding to move and experience working in a medicine unit is a great benefit for me and build my skills/knowledge. Lately though, I'm starting to feel that I miss my old unit and that I have some doubts that I am not really an acute type of nurse or don't know if I regret changing into a faster paced type of nursing. My question is.. is it worth leaving a workplace that I really liked to work in for something that will give me more experience with higher acuity patients considering that I am a new nurse? I'm worried that I would not like medicine and one thing I hate is actually not looking forward to work or dread going to work. I did feel a little bit of an outcast but that's I guess understandable and I will try to give it some time.. I just don't know if I made the right decision about leaving a job I could be passionate about and look forward to everyday. I hope this makes sense d64ab69d-0af9-4126-8b0c-41fb8072014a

What are your goals? What made you switch in the first place? If you goal as a new nurse is to gain experience fast, acute care is the place to be. It comes at a price, however, of stress, very fast pace and, yes, feeling like you don't want to go back to work some days.

Your concerns are normal. And your feeling out of your depth for a while in acute care will also be completely normal. Depends on whether you are willing to pay this price for experience.

I like this quote by an unknown author: " Comfort zone is a beautiful place but nothing ever grows there".

7 months is way too soon for a newbie to make a move. You were just beginning to learn that role.. and your nursing skills in general.

There 's NO going back now. It WILL be worth it in the long run.

Stop wasting your energy looking back, focus on succeeding in your new position.

Best of luck, you can do this.
