Is this how Nurses really behavior?

Published

Hello,

I am currently a pre-nursing student, and have been deciding if i should change my major to respiratory therapy. When doing research online I have found many times current registered nurses hate their job and are burnout from the stress and overload of their responsibilities. Also i have read that new grad nurses that work with experienced nurses get eaten alive on the job and get pushed aside. I just want an honest opinion of current and new grad nurses views on this topic and if most of it is true or not. I know there are politics with any job, but how about the treatment among one another, especially new grads.

thanks.

I really think that depends on the facility. I can honestly say I experienced very little bad treatment when I was a new grad, though that was nearly 10 years ago. I have seen this type of treatment, but not frequently. I have heard of others reporting this type of behavior and yes, nursing does have that horrible reputation, but I would not let that deter me from pursuing a nursing career. I think any health care career requires some degree of "tough skin," though I am not saying inappropriate and rude behavior should be accepted or expected. In my general observations, health care professionals tend to have strong personalities because this is can be a stressful career area. I say go for what you want, be it nursing or respiratory therapy.

I think work is what you make of it. Reading online isn't going to be very accurate information. I mean it's real vents and frustrations, but it's human nature to vent about the negatives. I mean think about it, if you are the type to lets say vent about your B/F, Husband whatever. Do you call your Girlfriends up to talk to them when he has ****** you off more than when he is being nice?

Some people don't vent about relationships so it might not be the best example, but I know tons of people that will call to vent about the negatives. The positives are usually shared around holidays when it's like "oh he got me a GC to the spa" or something. It's just the way we are built. So even though you are reading a lot of negatives, you aren't seeing the positives. I have no doubt that some nurses do get burnt out. What job is free of any stress??

It is up to you though what you put up with in all aspects of the job. IF you allow yourself to be a doormat, you will be walked on. You have to be assertive *not to be confused with ******* and stand up for yourself if the situations calls for it. Keep a positive attitude and don't get sucked into the negativity or else it will make you dread your job.

I don't think being a RT will necessarily be any better. If this is something you want to do and your heart is in it, than go for it and don't let any negativity stand in your way. Negativity breeds negativity. It won't be a bed of roses I am sure, but you can have a very high input as to what it is. Once your in and you put in your one-two years, you will have to freedom to move around as well if you aren't liking a unit.

Best of luck to you.

You are going to find "bullies" and difficult personalities in ANY field, whether it is nursing, accounting, engineering, etc.

Don't let it be a deterrent to you if it's want you want to do...

Ok I just saw you are a male, so you probably don't vent about your B/F Husband. Or you might LOL, I realize guys tend to ***** about partners less then woman do so probably not a good analogy.

i've had great nurses to work with me and some that made that clinical a living (well you know). most have been wonderful. why do they get shoved to the side and the other ones and really bad days show up here? well, we're stressed, our families will just never understand the feelings that are running through you after a long day of clinical.
