Is ADN worth the wait?

Published

I am taking pre-reqs for the lpn program but I really would like to be an RN. The wait at my cc would be maybe a year to a year and a half for the adn. I am wondering if its worth the wait. By the time I wait and start the program, I could do a bsn. I also have a 1 yr old though, and need to work at least part-time. I just don't know what to do :/ is it possible to work while in a bsn program? Or should I just do lpn so I can make decent money for us and then bridge over? Is adn a waste of time? I could possibly work while on the wait list and save money...that's the only good thing I can think of.

I think that depends very heavily upon where you live. When I graduated from nursing school most people had ADN degrees, that was the norm in the area, so no one had difficulty getting a job. Now, I live in the LA area and most hospitals won't even consider a new grad nurse unless they have a BSN. I suggest checking out the job market in your area. Maybe call the nurse recruiter at a nearby hospital and ask how likely they are to hire a new grad ADN.

And yes it is possible to work. It isn't always easy but it is doable! I did it.

Only a year and a half? Definitely. The wait at the school I want here is 4 years!
