INTRIGUED: Dr. Burzynski

Hello I'm a new nurse graduate (pending my ATT & passing the NCLEX) and love to learn about anything in the medical field. I'm only a LPN but plan to continue on to a BSN and have no preference to any specialty at the moment. Mostly due to the fact that I just want a job wherever I can get one. But I also know most acute care settings are filtering out LPNs and, in my opinion, looking to start hiring mostly BSN grads. That being said, a handful of nursing specialties interest me the most; with oncology being one I would gratefully and humbly practice. I am watching a documentary called "Burzynski" and can't finish it until I posted this. Its intriguing content has me wondered if any of you wonderful, dedicated nurses have ever heard of this doc and his TX? Like I said, still watching it and don't know how it will end but had to do this before I forgot!

PS the documentary is a little biased but in no way undermines the great work the NURSES do! burzynskimovie.com/

Why wouldn't any reputable doctor, scientist, reporter, splash the news all over the world if a cure for cancer was found?

Why wouldn't the Nobel Award for Medicine award this doctor the highest accolades and awards?

Why wouldn't drug companies offer him billions of dollars?

I hope you develop more critical think skills.

PS the documentary is a little biased

I have not seen the movie, and I don't plan on seeing it. However, I am guessing this is quite an understatement!

I have had patients go to him for the cures he promised. Every single one of them is dead. They were promised cures for incurable diseases- some ended up in the ICU at Texas Children's with severe electrolyte imbalances. One had to be transported home by air ambulance so that she could die at home. The Burzynski clinic demands funding up front and insurance companies don't cover his treatment. I know people who have paid $25,000 to walk in his door. I heard recently that they are no longer allowed to treat pediatric patients because a child died on his treatment due to hyponatremia but cannot find anything confirming that online. You won't find a reputable oncologist out there who would refer a patient to this man. This man cannot cure cancer- he preys on vulnerable people and takes their savings in the process.

I know the show has its biases too, but 60 Minutes did a piece a year so ago on firms that were promising a cure using stem cell technology. Basically it was the same type of thing...they make some unreasonable promise of a cure (use unresearched methods). They take a ton of money upfront from those grasping for straws looking for a cure. The patients are not cured, but these companies have a bunch of money in their pockets (or safe in an offshore bank account). These companies are pretty despicable and I'm starting to get the same idea about the Burzynski clinic--and those film festivals that give this documentary their awards.

So I went to the site for this movie. I watched the trailers. I too was INTRIGUED. I'm intrigued that so many reasonable appearing individuals are so gullible. They or their loved one has taken this snake oil and think the salesman is the 2nd coming. Yet, a very little amount of research shows just how much of a lie this movie is, and just how much damage this "miracle cure" can do.

If you are so intrigued, just do a Google search--I think you will learn everything you need to learn about this "doctor."
