Interview and offered shadowing question

I have had the last few interviews and have shadowed, then I do not get the job. Please tell me how to land it. I assume the interview went well, but I am doing something I am not aware of in the shadowing experience. I have 10 months experience at a prison infirmary. So if anyone is out there can tell me how they got through the shadowing experience in a hospital and landed the positon I would appreciate it. I would hate to go through it again and not get the job.

Im not sure what you mean by "shadowing." Is this something they do somewhere that Im not aware of?

Nicki, I too had to shadow as a 2nd interview. The nurse manager who interviewed me the first time was not present, she set up one of the other nurse leaders (not sure of her official title) to help "coordinate" my experience. Basically I was shown the board (interview was for an OR position), asked what case I wanted to see, and then dropped off in that room. When the case was done the nurse came back and asked what I'd like to see next. It reminded me of being in clinical. None of the nurses asked me any questions beyond basic friendly chat (What ya doing here, when do you graduate, etc.). They also said I could stay, "as long as you want." I ended up staying around five and a half hours, but now I worry that wasn't long enough. The nurse manager said it would be another week or two before a decision was made, so no idea if I got the job yet.

BiblePoet, I tried to be really respectful (yes, ma'am, etc.) and ask a few questions relevant to the cases I was observing. I also wrote thank you letters to the nurse manager who interviewed me initially and the nurse who took care of me the day of the shadowing telling them how much I enjoyed the experience and the staff and that I was very interested in the position. Like I said earlier though, I haven't heard back yet as to whether or not I got the job.

Good luck on your future interviews!!

biblepoet: my suggestion for job shaddowing in an area of interest would be: be engaged. ask quetsions, interact with everyone in the setting. i do not know the type of setting you are wishing to clinically work in in the hosptial setting. however an individual whom is engaged with the co-workers he/she is shadowing with, will have the upper hand on someone that comes in and just walks around behind the assigned nurse. hope this helps and good luck with future interviews.

I have my very first new grad interview next week and it is one hour with the manger followed by one hour shadowing on the unit. I agree it is difficult to feel out just what you should do!
