Interview at Duke

Hi all,

I am graduating this May, and I have just received word that I will have an interview at Duke University Hospital next week. I was wondering if anyone had any interview tips for me? This is my very first interview (besides a life guarding job) so I need all the help I can get!

Thanks so much to everyone who replies!

Hi Luckybella. Congratulation on interview. My advice would be to be yourself. Be confident and don't be afraid to talk about all your good qualities that you can bring to their hospital setting. They are interested in someone who is highly motivated and eager to learn. So, mention some of the experience where you showed these qualities.

Good luck

THanks MihaSK! I just interviewed with a hospital in SD and would prefer to stay here, but no one has heard yet, so I am excited for the opportunity to interview with Duke. Did you decide to accept the position? Also, did you enjoy the the staff/facility when you went there? Thanks!

I love DUKE. The staff is friendly and super helpful. I wish that hospital like that could be in SD. But I am ready to move if nothing else here. Yes, I accepted the offer. The program starts at the end of August, so I have plenty of time to move to NC. Are you still waiting to hear from SD? What unit are you interviewing for? Let me know how it goes.

BTW, if you have any questions about the program or just about DUKE, you can chat online with the recruiter. They have chat session every Tuesday and Thursday. I got lots of my questions answered there before my interview.

Hey all,

I actually just got contacted by a nurse recruiter and have an interview for a new grad position this month. Would any of you be willing to part with some advice or words of wisdom for me? Thanks in advance!

mihaSK gave you some very sound advice. I would also suggest that you be prepared to answer the question: "why do you want to come to Duke?"

Hi mihaSK,

If I were you, I would start looking for a place right now!! I've been finding that many of the more affordable aprtments are already gone!! Summer is the peak move in time down there. I'm actually going down this week to look at a few places and also say hello to my future manager :)

Hi bigworld,

I've been looking at some places online. I won't be able to get there until late July. Let me know how it goes with you.

Thanks for the advice, everyone!

I interviewed with Scripps for their overall new grad program and they said we would know by June 20th. I would love to stay in SD but someone said they interviewed 290 of us for 70 spots...so over 200 of us won't get it. So, I'll take any interview I can get. Glad to hear that you love Duke! Does anyone know how the cost of living is in North Carolina? I've heard mixed opinions.

Well, it is definitely cheaper than California. There are nice houses with lots of land for reasonable prices. But your salary would be much less than in CA. Anyway, I think you get better quality of life in NC. Don't get me wrong, CA is beautiful and I love it but as a young professional I am struggling here.

I've heard that the quality of living is great...such a beautiful state for sure! Sorry to ask so many questions but I was wondering if you knew how many they interviewed and hired for your cohort? I am torn because the flights are so expensive for my interview date...I mean obviously I want to go but if they are interviewing like 100 people for 1 spot then my chances would be very low and the flight would be very expensive...you know? Did you go to school in SD as well?

I'll let you know how it goes. You might have to consider taking a place without seeing it. The properties closer to the hospital are newer and more expensive. I won't have a car right away, so proximity is important for me. You can find cheaper places a bit further out, but will most likely need a car.

Ohh how is the cost of renting around the hospital? Do you like the area? Good luck in finding a place, I hope you find one you fall in love with! Where are you from originally?

I interviewed for the OR unit. So, I think it is different than regular new grad program. I was selected to attend open house, which I believe they did for 2 days. Their website mentioned that this program is offered 1-2 times a year. They selected 30 applicants and from those 12-15 got the job offer. They have Tuesdays and Thursdays live chat on their website. You should try it and ask them all the questions you might have. They are very helpful.
