I'm an LVN turned RN student about to graduate in a few weeks. So, take my opinion with that in mind.

Phones are a necessary evil

In most facilities. Necessary because the facility admin requires them.

Evil because they do constantly ring. [emoji38]

I, too, think it's odd and possibly rude to answer a call while at the pts bedside, but evidently, this is the expectation.

One good thing about phones is that you are more likely to catch the call back from the MD you paged.

The nurses I've worked with don't love the phones, they don't love being interrupted constantly, etcetera.

As students about to graduate shortly, we are encouraged to ask the nurse if we can keep the phone. The nurses love this, lol!!!

As an LVN, in a 50+ bed facility, the lead floor tech was responsible to hold the phone. I often didn't mind offering to keep the phone. Often because I was waiting on a call back from an MD.

I think the voiceras have an option to just say, I'm busy, call back later.
