international student in Nursing Program

I am Thai, 24 yrs. I hold BA in Tourism but I am interested to work as a nurse in NY. So, I am looking for the good Nursing Program in college, NY. I would like to get AAS degree in Nursing. I did contact to the college but I got the answer from the advisor each college which international student can't take the NCLEX-RN exam even hold AAS degree. Now, I am deciding to NY in next semester to study. So, I would like to know my chance to take NCLEX-RN exam. Would someone suggest me the step to be the RN who can work in NY, please.

By the way, please suggest me the college as well.

Any nurse from any country can take the NCLEX exam provided that they meet the educational requirements needed. NY is in the process of changing some of their laws that a BSN will be required in the near future.

You have to decide what type of school that you are interested and where in NY that you wish to live. Please be aware that many schools do have a waiting list of a year or more.

Now I live in Pattaya. But in next year i am going to move to Bangkok, i have to work there.

Can you please give me some hints/help on choosing the right program? I have a Bachelor's degree in a non-nursing field. I am in US working for a company with work visa. My work visa still have about more than 4 years left. But there won't be OPT for me any more if I change to student visa and go to another program.

Even though there is bad news about EB3 cutoff starting from next year, I still want to study nursing, because I am not sudying nursing just for GC, but also for the caring of the people and the career development.

With the new rulings, if you are affected by them, you wil need to leave the US after your schooling and wait for your number to comeup, as was done in the past. Not sure if they are going to make any changes to this new ruling.

I am expecting to get Canadian permanent residency very soon. I hope US nursing creditials is accepted there.

You still will need to apply for a Canadian nursing license in the province where you will be living. In the US, due to the need for the Visa Screen Certificate, a Canandian RN is now required to sit for either the NCLEX or CGFNS exam, even if they actually hold a licnese in the US due to reciprocity from Canada.

Thanks suzanne4. My plan is to go to a US nursing school, pass NCLEX and get a US RN license, doing some internship (with CPT if possible) there, go to Canada, pass Canadian nursing license exam, work as a RN in Canada.

If I want to work in US later, with TN visa, do I still need visa screen, even if I do not apply for GC in US?

First of all, you will not be able to work in the US on a TN visa. Those are for citizen's of either Mexico or Canada. Having permanent residency doesn't make you a citizen, only when you actually have a Canadian passport are you a citizen of that country.

The new rulings that just came out this week are going to put a major hindrance on your ideas. You will be able to complete school and with the OPT, be able to get additional work experience for the one year, then you will be required to leave the US until you get a visa number assigned, which will probably take you three or more years.

Visa Screen Certificate is required of any nurse that has trained out of the US. If you trained in Canada, you have to have a Visa Screen Certificate for the TN visa.

Why not attend nursing school in Canada? If you are getting permanent residency there, I do not think that you will be able to be away for four years and be able to keep your papers. You need to check on that with an immigration attorney. Even the US has requirements about minimum time spent in US to be able to retain your green card.

Please do alot more research before beginning what you are planning to do.

Also be aware that most programs in the US have a long waiting list, on average of about two years, the private colleges, no, but the tuition will be much more expensive.
