Hi all - I would like more input/advice on Excelsior College MSN program. I was recently accepted. I am pretty excited to start. I guess I am looking for anyone who has taken the program or starting. Any inside scoop would be helpful.

I am also now the "super-user" for the systems we use in the OR where I work. We are working with GE Centricity. It works great for Pre/post op and intraop documentation.

Also, would if be helpful to do informational interviews with vendors or other companies working in the NI area? I thought I could get a good feel for whats out there as well as places to do an adminstrative practicum for the MSN program when the times comes.

Any advice would be helpful. Thanks!

Robin

Hi Robin. I wasn't aware that Excelsior had an MSN program. What is the concentration? How does it work? Thanks.

Specializes in Informatics, Education, and Oncology.

Hi Robin,

I've taken courses and was previously enrolled in Excelsior's Masters in Nursing ( major- clinical systems management) program.

The course work is challenging and exciting! Since the program is totally on-line you will need a great deal of self discipline and should not be the kind of student that needs face to face interactions. Please see numerous previous posts on the topic of Excelsior within this forum. You can also read about other Clinical Informatics programs in previous posts on this forum.

The American Medical Informatics Association also has a detailed section on it's website related to certificate and graduate programs in Informatics - check it out.

Sure, if you can do an informational interview with a vendor that would be great. Your practicum does not have to be with a vendor. Your practicum can be done at your own hospital, especially since you are a super-user there.

Good Luck!

Thanks for the input! I am familiar with online learning, I am a grad of the Excelsior ADN program. I really like it b/c I can set my own pace.

I also just took a nurse educator position at a surgery center where I work. Hopefully I could do my practicum there as well since we have a lot of new technology and of course ever changing!

I will keep updating how i like the program etc...

Thanks again - This forum has been a wealth of info for me.

Hi - the program is MSN with emphasis in Clinical Systems Management.

A large portion is healthcare informatics. It is totally on-line learning.

They also have a Health INformatics graduate certificate. CHeck out the Excelsior website for more details. Looks like a good program.

Thanks -
