Info-WGU Pre-Licensure Program

Nursing Students Western Governors

Updated:   Published

Hi,

I am eyeing for the Pre-Licensure program. I already hold a Bachelor's Degree in Sociology and have done medical case management for some years now and just recently got my CNA. I am looking to attend WGA in California, but am not sure if they are still accepting applications as I understand that California is one of the more competitive areas. I have not had a chance to take my TEAS exam as some of the other schools I have applied to do not require it so I missed the last time that WGU was accepting applications for CA. Anyway, I am curious what type of TEAS test scores the school most frequently accepts. My Science Pre-Req GPA is a 3.5 if they include Chemistry and higher than that if they do not include Chemistry. I am just trying to prepare myself for the application process and am interested to get feedback from people who are currently in the program for California as I have only seen someone from the TX program post. Thanks!

Right now is not accepting applications for the California nursing program as it is on hold and they do not know when that will be lifted. It is the most competitive state when it is going and a TEAS score in the 90s is almost always required to be competitive.

Thank you Ashley! Curious if you know what types of GPA the program considers competitive and if they calculate the GPA on the sciences or based on all pre-requisites, e.g. public speaking, English, etc.

A competitive science in Cali is high 3 and it is based on only science grades!

Hi Ashley,

Thanks for the feedback! I did not see your response until now, but again. Thanks!

P.S.

I am studying for the TEAS and not sure if you know what the average score is for a person who usually gets accepted to ? I heard the 90's, but I wonder where within the 90's the average accepted student falls. Just asking because some of the state schools, you need to get a 94% and up to be competitive. Either way, I am shooting for the stars to get the highest score possible. Thanks in advance! ?

Hi there!

Just graduated from CA and on the site for job advice. Saw your post and felt compelled to reply (but I hope you don't need it anymore). From my understanding, they consider candidates who have their bachelors or associates first. And from that pool, they only look at prerequisite GPA, not overall. I don't remember what the prereqs are exactly, but A/P, micro, biochem, etc. And WGU states the cutoff for TEAS is 60%, but in reality, it's 90%+. But most of all and after the stats, they look for experience and maturity. I happened to have very good stats: Bachelors of Science in Biology, 4.0 prereq GPA (3.2 overall GPA, which is not taken into consideration), 97% TEAS, 2 years EMT.

But the classmates who wouldn't be thought to have the best stats going into nursing school, I know will be the nurses I would want to take care of me.

Moral of the story: I believe WGU CA, after a long pause, is reopening its applications in April 2020, so I would highly suggest submitting your application. And once it's in, they have it on file and will consider you every application cycle (which I believe is quarterly). So you can retake classes for better grades or reattempt TEAS to be more competitive for the next round.

I hope this helps! And take care of yourself as well as you do others!

Thank you Jan11!

I took a break from this site due to my lengthy TEAS study schedule so I missed your post. Thanks for giving some feedback. I appreciate the information IMMENSELY! If I have questions that come up later, is it OK to private msg you if needed?
