Med Center (Houston) hospitals usually start around 23-25/hr for new grads. I have no idea about St. John, none in Houston.
I don't think it's hard at all to find new grad jobs, you just have to apply when they are open (a few mths before graduation).

graduatenurse,
COME ON DOWN!!! Houston employment remains wide open for nurses. With your experience, you are not exactly a new grad; most hospitals do offer formal programs for new grads (residencies, internships, etc.) but you will have to check with them to determine whether they have specific start dates or not.
Be sure to factor in the whole 'commuting issue'. Don't settle on an apt until you figure out where you are going to work. Our traffic is legendary, so you don't want to be dependent on the (ironically named) freeways - you'll want to use surface streets instead.
Just PM me if I can be of any assistance.
