Hi everyone,
I currently work in the ICU as a student extern. I just want to know who is usually on the interdisciplinary team in the ICU,.. such as APN's, PharmD, attending, residents,.. and what exactly is their role in patient care...? Does anyone have an idea?

When they do interdisciplinary round in our PICU, the conference room gets packed out: Attending, residents, head nurse, nurse practitioner, social worker, pharmacist and dietician. Depending on the week we're having, sometimes the chaplain comes too. As far as I know, they go through the patients we have on the unit, especially the ones who've been there for a while (we have a kiddo who got admitted in December and we have no idea when she'll be leaving!) and make sure everyone's coordinated with the care of that kid. Take that one kiddo for example ... without going into detail, she's a trach/g-tube dependent kid, waiting for a bed at a rehab hospital. So social work will give updates about the status of long-term placement, dietary will let us know how they think her diet needs to be changed based on how she's growing, the chaplain will share the conversation that they had with the parents the other day, etc...
It helps to keep everyone moving in the same direction, especially in the more complex/lengthy cases.
Hope that helps!

Doesn't each pt.'s primary nurse attend , also ?
We don't do primary nursing in our ICU. Our average length of stay is somewhere in the range of 3 days, I believe, so it's not like the NICU. We only have the rare bird who hangs out with us for months. They tend to get 'pseudo-primarys' who will take care of them more than others. But we don't have anything established.
