ICU to OR?

Published

How many RNs have gone from ICU to the OR? I am currently a travel nurse in ICU and was toying with the idea of going back home and trying the OR. What type of orientation should I expect to get? How difficult would it be for me to move from critical care to OR? Thanks!!

It's not the care that is difficult. It's knowing the equipment, machines, and supplies. There are so so so many!!!! You'll pick it up but I would say a minimum of 3-4 months orientation.

I am currently in the OR and was hired as a new grad for a perioperative training program (6 months). The hospital required a three year commitment after the completion of the program (I signed a binding contract). I heard many negative comments about the OR environment (you will lose your bedside nursing skills, it's so stressful and high paced, the doctors are nasty, etc.) but I truly enjoy working with a team of very talented and dedicated surgeons, techs, etc. In 10 months, I have learned so much and presently believe this is the best place for me. Good luck to you.

Did you make the move. I myself will get an interview from OR this week hopefully.

I am an OR nurse who recently transferred to ICU and now coming back to OR. I love the OR! Would love to answer any questions you may have :)
