I have to do a presentation as a student to RNs on my unit.Need help picking a topic!

I graduate in december and am doing my preceptorship right now. Me and another student have to pick any topic of our choice and educate the nurses on our unit, I am on a progressive care unit. I want to pick something that they can actually learn from and it wont be a waste of their time. I cannot think of a good topic. Please help me! Especially if you are already a nurse, what could a student do a presentation on to nursing staff that would actually help them? This is NOT for a grade, I just want to be helpful and not be a waste of time! Thanks so much! By the way, we see everything on our unit when it comes to medsurg. A lot of strokes and MIs renal failure, etc. Any topics that you think the nurses could actually learn from. It can be on anything at all.

Seek a topic that the nurses themselves need to learn in the near future. Are there recent changes to policies and procedures? Any updates to standards of care about stroke or MI? Anything the nurses seem to be confused about like a new piece of equipment introduced to the floor? You could also ask the nurse educator for suggestions. It's good to introduce yourself to as many different staff members too :) Good luck!

That's a great idea! Thank you.

the way staff educators decide what to present is very often by doing a needs assessment. part of that is asking the management about anything new, or if any staff questions or incident reports have come up. you can also look outside the hospital, perhaps to present on an educational opportunity available to staff nurses in the community, a volunteer opportunity, or the like. how about posting something on the lounge bulletin board or electronic equivalent saying that you will be willing to research and present on the topic of their choice, giving a general list of suggestions like the above, and asking for a wish-list?

Does it have to be something clinical? Could you do something like the benefits of taking scheduled breaks, prioritizing taking care of ourselves as nurses so we can be at our best for patients? Ways to de-stress on the job? (using moisturizing lotion on your hands to prevent cracking, making sure you eat, even if its just a few bites of protein if you can't sit down, wearing comfortable shoes, having someone you can vent to if you need a release, listening to your favorite music during lunch). Just an idea :)

Exactly...ask your audience what they would find useful.
