I am a new grad and am looking for employment. In one of my applications it asks for me to come up with a performance improvement project. Without know much about the hospital I do not know what is important to them. Does anyone have any ideas?

Hey Anaturegirl!
I think I'm applying to the same program (EL Camino Hospital?) and having the exact same problem. I really don't know what they are looking for and I don't know what to suggest. I graduated in march and still haven't had a single bite so I'm working double time to try and figure out what these places are looking for. I can't afford to muck this one up! Have you asked your old professors for suggestions?

How about you guys check some of the literature on evidence-based practice? El Camino knows perfectly well you don't know much about them-- they want to know if you know how to problem-define and -solve your way out of a damp paper bag. :) If you don't yet, reading some of the evidence-based practice literature will help you there, too. And part of the process is to figure out how to do that.

If you need a topic, anything having to do with early Sepsis identification is really hot right now - or anything related to JC core measures Core Measure Sets | Joint Commission
Thank you HouTX!

Hi all,
I applied for the same and already submitted my applications. I think, they want to know your idea of performance improvement project topics through your experience as a student nurse. Good luck!! Mine wasn't a fancy topic but I wrote about what I had in mind. Good luck everyone, hope we all get through the next process:)

Just wondering for those who applied..how much did you write on your project idea? Some of my classmates are writing 3-4 pages, but I was thinking to write a paragraph or two on each topic...

Another "hot" topic is HCAP. I would also find out how to set up a performance improvement presentation. Also, "hard stop time out"--which if you read about it, can be applicable to many situations in various settings. I would also get very familiar with any current performance reviews/policies whatever you can find specific to the facility that you are applying. Tie in the mission statement. To stand out, you may have to NOT write a paper on the subject, but make it more visual, add graphs, all that good stuff. You could always write an introduction and conclusion in paragraph form.Get creative--within the guidelines that they suggest and if it is allowable. Add a teach ready power point. Or an informational hand out. If it is allowed, I would get as creative as they will let you. That would stand out more than a paper on the subject would.

pressure ulcer prevention, pain control, patient satisfaction, decreased fall risk, med errors, nosocomial infection rates, readmission rates, discharge follow up compliance, discharge teaching in general, proper meds prescribed and tests performed in a certain order/timely manner for suspected pneumonia, MI, etc.
Just a list, now you figure out why!
