I,ve been working for 20 years but since I started working on an acute care hematology/bone marrow transplant floor I can't get off on time and I often don't get my breaks. My husband has been ill and is upset i'm not getting home to help with the kids. I know this is true but I have a hard time saying no to my patients. How can you say no I don't have time to change you I need to chart to get off on time. The patient could end up waiting an hour or more. Please help!

Is it really either/or? Are you normally finishing up your charting at the end of your shift so that the patient's needs at that time are keeping you from completing your charting? Can you rearrange your work so that you that you are done charting earlier? Are you more concerned with your husband's reaction or are YOU also wanting to get out more on-time? It sounds like you enjoy helping your patients and getting a little over-time can't hurt the old paycheck! Perhaps you could bring that point up to your husband?

Do the other nurses have any similar problems? Are they having to cut out patient care to get out on time. Maybe it is a nurse:pt ratio problem concerning the kind of care these pts deserve. Yoou may need to evaluate how the other nurses are getting out on time.
