I failed nursing school!

Published

For any nurse out there the honest truth! What motivated you to continue to go through nursing school? Did you fail on your first try? Did you have any doubts? Would you change your major if you could? Should I find another profession to peruse? I want to work in the medical field but I don’t think nursing is for me. It’s true I lost all of my motivation. I got really depressed after I failed nursing school. I was thinking about something else. I know school is hard no matter what you choose but this is mainly about my mental health, stress, and anxiety. Before I went into nursing I wasn’t sure if I wanted to do it and I was having mixed thoughts. Any words of wisdom or advice?

Specializes in ER.

Mental toughness is needed in nursing. It's not for everyone. Do honest self assessment. If it's not for you, that's perfectly okay.

Specializes in UR/PA, Hematology/Oncology, Med Surg, Psych.

I think Radiology Technology sounds like a great area to get into. It's fairly diverse with the ability to specialize in ultrasound, MRI, etc. Maybe that is something you should look into.

I flunked out of my nursing program by not taking the minimum pass rate for med math seriously enough and had to sit out a term. Once I got past the embarrassment of having failed I realized I had to make a choice. I thought a lot about whether or not nursing was "for me". I did go back much more focused, passed and got my license.

OP, do a lot of thinking, honest self-assessment and look into alternatives before making any decisions. Best of luck to you!
