plain water expands when it freezes... the other ingredients added to popsicles help to prevent most of the expansion thus it's actually closer to being mL for mL frozen and melted..

Would be interesting to actually measure a few mL of ice and see what it melts into and take a popsicle and also see what it melts into.

OK, that's your assignment for today. :) Seriously, I'd like to see this done and reported.

Remember, the way you determine the volume of an ice cube is to submerge it completely in a clear measuring cup of really cold water (do this fast so as not to melt it much) and note how much water it displaces. This is NOT the same volume of the water it's made of, and the cube also includes air. Now crush that puppy (looks bigger now, doesn't it?) and put it in another cup to melt and measure later.

Ditto with the popsicle, except you'll have to get the sticks out of it and maybe refreeze it solid before doing the displacement test. Note what the label says before you start-- does it give a liquid measure?
