I feel dumb asking this, but can anyone tell me about a colposcopy. I have to have one and am scared of whether it is painful or uncomfortable I don't know much about the procedure.

I had one way back whenI had cervical dysplasia. Colopscopy is very crampy, so ask your dr about taking MOTRIN first, before the procedure. It takes a very short time...the colpolscope is only the machine that enables your gyno to easily visualize abnormal areas of the cervix, pinpoint one, and extract a tiny bit of tissue for examination under a microscope. This is the hard part, when they dilate the cervix and take the tissue sample. It's crampy and pinchy, but BRIEF. You may bleed a slight bit afterward. THat is normal ....if you bleed heavily, or pass clots, keep a pad count and call your gyno asap. It is a fast procedure....I think I was done in less than 10 minutes. It's not so bad........do ask about prophylactic MOTRIN however ok???? Best wishes, I hope you come thru a-ok. If you have more questions just ask me. BTDT.
some VERY good info follows:

good luck!
Thankyou for the info!! How often is it that they find anything significant? Can I ask how old you were when yours was done? I am only 23 and wonder if this is really necessary- my inner chicken is taking over!!!!:uhoh21:

Darchild77, take a deep breath and relax. I had a colposcopy last year and mine was fine...meaning my results were negative. Make sure you have all of your questions answered with your healthcare provider. When I saw mine I had a list of questions that I had written on a note pad. You might want to have someone go with you for support.

I had a colposcopy done when I was 29 y.o (now 33) my results turned out fine, I have a very low tolerance for pain, it was nothing, a little pinch & that's it, maybe some mild cramping & scant bleeding. It's over very quickly.
GOOD LUCK! :kiss
I was 24 and had SEVERE dysplasia (very close to Stage one Carcinoma in-situ).....
I was fine. They treated it and no recurrence. Try not to worry. Really, we are lucky. Dysplasias and cancers of this nature are most often caught and treated early. I went on to have two wonderful kids and NO abnormal PAP's in YEARS!!!!
One day at a time....no borrowing trouble ok????

... my colposcopy was a nightmare! I switched GYNs because of it. I have to have another one next month and am already freaking out, even though my new GYN promised to take it easy.

I had so many colp with cryo that I lost track (had TAH in 96 for several reasons including repeated bad Paps). I was and am a wimp, they hurt and I didn't feel well enough to go back to work for 2-3 days.
My 23 yo daughter has a very gentle GYN (he is my Gyn also and he really is good, he has done Paps on me and I didn't realize he had started until he was done and pulling his gloves off).
(anyway)
She a bad Pap after my grandson was born. She is pretty high strung and anxous, for that reason her culp with cryo were done under sedation and it went fine. She was sore enough afterwards she was glad she had sedation and greatful for the post procedure Percocet.
I don't know if it is any comfort to you or not but when my daughter had hers the Gyn told her that almost 90% of "bad Paps" in women under 30 are due to HPV and rarely recur with adequate treatment.
