How to Study for Med-Surg 2

Hi Everyone,

I'm in a competitive nyc cuny program, and I just took my first med-surg 2 exam. I got a 72 and am a little shattered as I really hoped to do better than that. I am not sure what it is I did wrong, but I did read all that was assigned, I made notes, and I reviewed my notes prior to the exam. I am just writing to ask does anyone have any ideas, tips, like any supplement books or review guides they could recommend, that may help me improve my grade - like what is the best review guide for student nurses?

I was told the fundamentals semester is the toughest and was so relieved when I got through it ( I got an 85 on the first fundamentals exam), so I am super stressed on why I did so bad at this, my first med-surg 2 exam ( which was on peri-op, and cardio-vasc)

Thanks everyone, really appreciate your advice.

That's discouraging, but hang in there! To answer your question...start with your professor first. Ask for suggestions on how to better prepare. There usually is a "trick" to test taking that involves being sure you understand the question. Look for a common theme in the question and answers. You can usually narrow those down to two answers. Ask your professor (if not already provided) what level will the questions be. ie---just information? Critical thinking? A&P where you have to understand the working of the body in order to understand what the question is asking for, those types of things. If you can, ask to review your exam and answers, making mental note (you may not be allowed to make an actual note due to test security) of how you missed the question/answers. And, try to study as you go along so that if you don't understand something said during lecture you can approach the professor and ask for clarification. Perhaps a study group will help. Some people do better with group studying, others alone...only you can determine what is best for you. Persevere. Good luck on the next exam!

Same here. I felt very frustrated because I got a C from Fundamental at last semester. My average is 80.15 almost reached the b, but it was still a C. For the first exam of med-surge I studied very hard and read every details of each chapters, but I only got a 81, yes it is a lower B. I am got mad at those questions because I think those not test your knowledge but test your common sense. Like, I remember a question was like" what is the education you should do for the sickle disease patients? the options are A make sure to do more excises, B drink a lot of water C teach patients to relax...Based on my knowledge from text book , for these patients we have to prevent infection, dehydration, and avoid strenuous exercises, so I put B, but the right answer is C. I just can not understand the rational . what dose mean to educate patient to relax?? it is obscure, not clear. is this the critical thinking?????
