How to run a Study Group?

Published

I am going to run my first study group. There are 4 students including myself. Any tips?

I am not sure how to do it because the tests are in critical thinking format, of course.

Is it best to divide the topics amongst the students and have each one prepare a mini lecture and/or a test?

Best to simply go over the information and facts of the subject, even though its Critical Thinking?

Thanks. Any advice and tips from your experience is GREATLY appreciated.

Best,

Scott

I was hired by my school to tutor groups of up to 6 at a time. What I like to do is have the students do most of the talking. I'll ask them what are the most important details of each disease, what do I assess for, what labs do I check, what interventions, meds & s/e, etc. I'll give them situations and they need to tell me what they would do. And I'll have the students critique each other on what they think would be best and why. They all keep coming back to me, so I'm doing something right :p

In my group we bring our lecture notes, nclex practice books, the text book and the accompaning study guide. We go through each section pertaining to the exam and answer questions. If one of us doesn't know or is unsure of the answer, we reason through it until we all understand. It's worked well this way to practice the critical thinking nec for the exams and it's fun. I wouldn't learn as much by doing mini lectures, I get enough of that in class
