How long for interim permit??

Published

It's been a horrible day. I just got off the phone with the BRN and they have no record of my transcripts. I applied for my interim permit and license by exam in late Dec/early Jan...my transcripts were mailed from HI on Jan 10 and they still have not recieved them. I just want to cry right now :crying2:

I am having another transcript sent express today or Monday but I am starting work on the 28th of Feb and I will need my interim permit by then. Does anyone know how long it takes to recieve a hard copy in the mail?? Right now it looks like I am going to have to drive up to Sacramento and physically go into the BRN office and see if I can get my IP on the 22 or the 24th (that was the recommendation from the HR dept. at the hospital where I will be working). Even then I don't know if it will be possible to get my IP. I can't believe that this happened to me, I know I have bad luck but this is just horrible :o

I would appreciate any advice.....it's been a terrible week and to top it off now this......

I am so sorry for your situation!!! I definately feel for you....

I turned in my application/fingerprints, etc right before christmas, and then paid for the NCLEX and got my ATT on Jan 1st. The IP came in the mail Jan 3rd.

You can keep checking to see if you have been cleared for your IP on the BRN website. There is a link somewhere where you can check the validity of an IP and just type in your name (leave the IP number blank) and if you have been cleared it will show up w/your name and an IP license number. Maybe your hospital will accept that license number until the hard copy comes in the mail?

Good luck...

Wow, I'm so jealous yours went through so fast. I'm not sure if it may take longer because I went to school in another state. ..I'm going to give it a few days, keep checking online and then by next friday I'm going to have to call again and I guess plan to go to their office if I cannot get a response. Atleast this copy will be sent with a tracking number so I can verify they actually get it. After that they siad it should only take a few days but I'm sure mail is quite backed up with budget cuts and everything...It sounds like there may still be hope for me though since yours went through in a reasonable amount of time. I'm crossing my fingers!! Thanks so much for writing me back, I didn't think I was going to get any responses!! :)

Hey girl..

Yeah we were warned that college administrations screw up our transcripts often. So we actually had the office send one to the BRN, as well as the School of Nursing so they could send it again themselves. Call your school in Hawaii and have it expressed over to Sacramento. I graduated Dec. 18 and my IP was issued Dec. 20, so they were pretty quick about it. Thing was they didn't need my transcript with the degree on it, just one that said I was graduating.. the school sends the official one sometime after the degree posts.. in other words I got my IP without the BRN having my degree-listing transcript. Hope this helps; see you at work on the 28th!!

Hey I was thinking about you earlier! Have you taken your NCLEX...if so how did it go?? If not, did you decide to put it off?? I've just been trying to study and have been scoring 65% on the Kaplan tests. I don't really know if that is good or what. I definately need to study some more but I fly out tomorrow and so I have been running around like a chicken with its head cut off. If you take your NCLEX before the 28th let me know how it goes and GOOD LUCK!! Hopefully I'll have my IP and my ATT before then so I can actually schedule a date. Either way I'll let you know how this whole ordeal goes...keep in touch with me and thanks for your response. It make me feel a lot better that once everything is in the process seems to go pretty fast!!

I am glad you are doing Kaplan. I'm doing that as well, and almost finished w/the program. Been scoring anywhere from 64-67% and I understand Kaplan feels if you get 62.3%-70% then you are prepared to take the NCLEX. (although the low percentage has me kinda iffy!!) I take mine on the 17th (GOSH so soon!)!!!! Keep us updated on how the IP thing goes!

As of now I plan to take it the 22nd.. I don't want to do it after starting work because I have to focus on the NICU. My friends and I last minute wanted to take Kaplan but in San Jose the next one starts in March and it will probably conflict with our work hours. So I am just going to go with what I have, which is a bunch of books! I use Kaplan, Davis, Kaplan's Flip o Matic drug book, their Dosage workshop, and Fluid and Electrolytes Made Incredibly Easy. I also have the a New format question book! I just kinda rotate with them, then do some practice questions. I'm also hovering around 67%.. so I am scared but I study every day.. I did also take a review course at SFSU which sort of helped but it was all lecture..

Well, good luck with your move! I didn't know you were still in Hawaii. Have you been to California before? Two of my friends got hired into our NICU too.. so there are 13 total. Can't wait til we all meet and start the challenge together! We'll have lots of questions for you since you precepted in the NICU already! We've only had one day there ever! Ok then, ttyl! :p

That's awesome that you will really already have two friends in the program! Are they all taking the NCLEX before the 28th?? I'll probably be the only straggler that hasn't taken it . I mean I know we have three months and all but I really want to get it out of the way so I don't have that cloud hanging over my head. I actually didn't take the Kaplan class, but I have been using a friends online course, the cd with the 7 tests on it ranging from 75-265 questions and using the blue book you can buy. I've also been doing NCSBN online, the mosby cat, and the new format book. Kaplan questions are the probably the hardest then the ncsbn. I just want to get my IP, ATT, take the test and of course pass.

I've only been to the bay area once so this will be quite a change. I'm stoked to get back into the NICU though, my last clinical was in Nov and I totally miss it. The babies at LPCH will be a lot more critical than those I worked with though, we only had a couple 23-25 weekers, not many heart defects (those get flown to the mainland usually), but there were a lot of vents. It will definately be a more intense setting with so much to learn! It's going to be an amazing opportunity.

If I don't hear from you before the 22nd, let me know how it goes! GOOD LUCK!! Before you know it you'll be able to call yourself a true RN :nurse: !!Otherwise when I figure out my IP crisis I'll let you know what happens. :o

I think those two girls are going to try and take it in March. Yeah, Kaplan questions seem to be the hardest! Some of them I read and swear that they are totally wrong! Did you interview at LPCH or do it over the phone? I actually know a girl from my hometown San Diego who also got hired in a different unit. I toured the NICU; it looks like a pleasant environment. When people ask where you work, saying Stanford or LPCH always carries a high reputation.. Some of the sickest babies will be in our unit! LPCH is always on the news as being the place where twins get separated and things like that!

If you're into Hawaiian food we got a few places around here.. It must be overwhelming to move to a new place and start a new job and raise a family! I'm sure your IP thing will work out. If anything, check the BRN website in Hawaii and check if your name comes up under Temp License. In California we can do this and it lists our IP number. Ok, its late, and I'm studying on a friday night while my fiance is out bowling.. how lame is that?? TTYL!

It is quite easy to go to Sacramento to get your Interim Permit. Just make sure that one of the states where you have a license in on Nursys.com or you will need a letter of verification from your state. You can either take the two sets of fingerprint cards with you or do a live screen at the Department of Justice that is only a few miles away.

I definitly would not lose any sleep over it............. :)

Thank you for your response!! I applied for license by examination...I hope it is still just as easy...? My fingerprint cards, application, picture and payment we sent in and processed in early January. The darn transcript didn't make it there though or it is lost in some back room under a pile of mail

I got my interim permit in just a few hours, but it was by endorsement.

What did the BON tell you?
