How should I introduce myself?

I am ending one career (non-medical) and starting nursing school in January (ADN). My dream job is to work in a NICU.

Through friends (my husband's boss and his wife), I have been given the name and business card of the doctor who heads the NICU in the hospital where I want to work. They have already spoken to this doctor about me, and I was told to send an e-mail to the doctor.

I am so grateful for the contact, but this all seems so early too. Do any of you have advice as to how to word this e-mail? Things to ask? Things to say? Anything?

    I would advise you to first do some homework. In most instances, the NICU physicians don't have any employment authority for nursing staff. This is the responsibility of the Nurse Director/leader of that unit. Find out if that is the case in this situation. If you were to try to gain entry via a Neonatologist, it may just have the opposite effect... and really tick off the nurse who does have that authority and responsibility.

    I think I would politely thank the MD for taking time to read the email, state your aspirations briefly and ask if he could suggest any reading material?

    Yeah...I would try to feel out the hospital. You may have a bad reaction instead. The docs have nothing to do with hiring new grads in my place. They do for NNPs, but definitely not nurses.

    Going to NICU from an ADN (vs getting a BSN) as a new grad would be pretty tough in this economy...but all depends on what their needs are.
